Portugal is one of the countries where the least is consumed, but where the most is paid
Portugal is one of the countries that consume less energy in Europe. According to 2019 data from Pordata, per capita consumption was among the lowest, alongside Malta, Bulgaria, Spain and Greece. The highest energy consumption is found in Finland, Austria, Denmark, Luxembourg and Estonia.
If we look only at the energy consumption of families, our country continues in second place in the ranking of those who consume the least (17.7%), well below the European average (26.3%).
According to the ERSE bulletin of June 2021, referring to the global monthly consumption, the Portuguese consumed about 20.9% above what was registered in May and approximately 7.9% more than what was registered in June 2020, due to to the pandemic.
But electricity prices for domestic users in Portugal averaged €0.2089 per kWh, online among the highest in Europe.
Earlier this month, REN announced that between January and September, most electricity in Portugal (61%) has already been located by renewable sources: hydroelectric (28%), wind (24%), biomass (7%) and photovoltaic (3.7%).
The production of electricity from fossil sources, on the other hand, represents 31% of consumption in the country, with a predominance of natural gas (29%), coal (2%) and imported energy (8%).
