I tell the Corriere – The wealth – culture gap in post-covid Venice
Dear Aldo,
the salary question, with waiters or cooks who cannot be found, is not what it is today. I, a public official, 30 years of seniority and a degree required for the position do not go beyond 1600 euros per month, a figure that the kiosks or bars in Venice do in one day. In the 70s I was amazed that my mother, graduated in chemistry and employed in a research institute, took ridiculous figures compared to those who had a tobacconist or were a motorboat operator or still the golden island I should have understood then that Italy is not a country for graduates and the lucky young people of today who can put their degrees abroad to good use.
Giovanna De Benedet
Dear Giovanna,
I would distinguish Venice from the rest of Italy. In recent decades, Venice has consciously chosen to commit suicide as a city, and to transform itself into a showcase. There could be a logic in all this: Venice as the historic center of Mestre, with museums and exhibitions of contemporary art, the university and the foundations, the Biennials and cinema, beauty and culture. But it obviously didn’t work. Because a city is not a showroom. Because a hit and run tourist, or even an educated visitor who stays for several days, or a student who spends a few months, do not have the same relationship with the city as those who were born there or chose it, and therefore know, live there. , he lives there and makes it live. We saw it with the pandemic, when the city depopulated. I have been several times in the deserted Venice: the aesthetic spectacle was wonderful, we have also seen dolphins in the lagoon; but in short, Italy not the Amazon, agua cielo mata, water sky forest. You, kind Mrs. De Benedet, in your letter do not deal only with Venice and its development model, but with the gap that opens in Italy between wealth and culture: many rich people have no culture, and many educated people are poor, not so much money as opportunities. This is true. But even more serious is the gap between wealth and work: money is made with other money, and work paid less and less. Maybe the waiters earn as much as you think (on the other hand, you try to pay for a speedboat, in short, a water taxi, with your credit card).
THE OTHER LETTERS OF TODAY
History
But what do our children eat at school?
I read with interest the letters with the appeals of some parents worried about their children who go to school with very heavy backpacks. Others, however, complain of the absence or lack of physical activity, which is done at school. As the father of a 9-year-old boy, I am stepping up to these appeals, but I am also worried about the nutrition that the school offers to our children. What do our children eat at school? Where do their dishes come from the raw materials that make up the dishes that the school administer to? Are they all at zero kilometers? Are those dishes that are prepared with off-season vegetables healthy? Tomatoes, for example, are found in school men all year round. a correct way to feed on raw materials that do not respect seasonality and are grown with special techniques? How important it would be, however, for the school to try to provide the healthiest food possible. If he could also dedicate, thirty minutes a week, a lesson on proper nutrition to follow, a real guide to nutrition, I think it could be of help both to our children and to us parents, and sometimes, to be quick. in the kitchen, we prepare dishes that are not always healthy for them. Proper nutrition and physical activity are closely related to the growth of our children, which the school will have to take into account.
