Ukraine renamed the icebreaker bought in Britain
Acquired for part of the state of the British research icebreaker James Clark Ross was named “Noosphere”. He provides logistics for the Ukrainian Antarctic station “Academician Vernadsky”.
As Ukrinform reports, with reference to Office of the President, during a working trip to Odessa region the head of state Vladimir Zelensky inspected icebreakers.
“After going through all the necessary procedures and changing the name of the court on the icebreaker” Noosphere “this year will go to the ocean and head for Antarctica in the direction of the Ukrainian polar station” Academician Vernadsky “, – it is reported
This icebreaker was previously part of the British Antarctic Mission under the name of James Clark Ross. The vessel was sold to the National Antarctic Research Center of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. On October 5, 2021, the icebreaker entered the waters of the port of Odessa. The port of his postscript is defined as Odessa, “the statement reads.
On board the icebreaker Zelensky review is a scientific laboratory, a cabin company and a control center.
Director of the National Antarctic Research Center of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine Yevhen Dykyi demonstrated the heads of the oceanographic installation of the state, which is used in ships with the use of scientific research.
The icebreaker is equipped with eight specialized laboratories and devices for sampling any sample from a depth of up to 8 km. From now on, Ukrainian researchers will have access to almost 90% of the world’s oceans. The presence of such a vessel, adapted to work in low temperatures, allows to significantly expand the range of scientific research.

Earlier, Ukrainian polar explorers complained to the President about the ship’s post. Today, Zelensky is in a video conference for researchers at the Akademik Vernadsky station about the arrival of the long-awaited icebreaker in Ukraine.
“Noosphere” is coming to you soon. So meet this Ukrainian “scientific beauty”. I greet you all! ” – he said.
The head of state also adds that he is developing a large-scale program to revive Ukraine’s research fleet, which includes the construction of 36 ships.
Leading and researcher of the Radio Astronomical Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Bohdan Havryliuk found that obtaining an icebreaker is an important condition for the Ukrainian fleet. According to him, the new name of the ship – “Noosphere” – accurately reflects the teachings of the famous Ukrainian scientist Volodymyr Vernadsky. He decided that Ukrainian scientific courts did not enter the water area for a long time and did not perform research.
“Let’s hope that we will return to the Great Land from the territory of Antarctica on the Noosphere,” said the researcher.
Zelensky also talked to polar explorers, members of the 25th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition.
Researcher of the Department of Geology and Geophysics of the National Antarctic Research Center of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine Yuriy Otruba asked the President to assist in continuing the targeted scientific and technical program of research in Antarctica until 2030.
“A few years ago, we had much more funding for the Antarctic center. If we keep it at this level, we will be able to achieve a lot in terms of scientific achievements and in terms of modernization of the station, “said Otruba.
In addition, Zelensky experienced the capabilities of the Boris Alexandrov Research Court, which will be used to monitor the Black Sea floor and collect environmental data. The ship, formerly known as “Belgium”, Ukraine received as a gift from Belgium.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyi took part in the meetings of the Congress and regional authorities to discuss the beginning of the season, the fight against the spread of the coronavirus and the development of Ukrainian ports.
On August 19 this year, the National Antarctic Research Center and the UK’s Research and Innovation Foundation (which includes the British Antarctic Service) signed an agreement to purchase the James Clark Ross icebreaker in Ukraine.
