One step forward for the big road
Closer to accession is the PPP project of the Thessaloniki-Edessa road axis. More specifically, the road that will be upgraded is the so-called E02 Mavrovouni – Edessa, Giannitsa Bypass, Chalkidona Bypass.
Then the file that will go to the Interministerial Committee for approval in order for the project to be included in the government’s PPP project program. The project also includes the operation-maintenance of the Axios River-Edessa Bridge section. The goal is to start the competition in the first half of 2022.
According to the decision, the upgrading works of the Thessaloniki-Edessa road axis, especially in the upgrade of the EO2 road axis (Mavrovouni-Edessa, Giannitsa Bypass, Chalkidona Bypass) is mandatory.
This is another road project-PPP, after the section of BOAK Hersonissos-Neapoli, Kalamata-Pylos-Methoni, the overpass of the Peripheral Thessaloniki and Drama-Amphipolis. All this is part of the ambitious project program of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport that reaches 13 billion euros.
Upgrading the road network of the area
Last April, the country’s prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, had announced the specific PPP together with Drama-Amphipolis. Also in this project, recruitment procedures have started.

What is the project?
It will be connected to the Egnatia Odos and consequently to the national network of highways. According to initial estimates, the travel time of the new axis will be reduced by about 10-15 minutes.
Interventions will be carried out in a length of 25 km from the prefecture of Thessaloniki to the prefecture of Pella and specifically:
1. Bypasses of Chalkidona – Giannitsa
Construction of the Chalkidona bypass about 6 km long and the Giannitsa bypass about 9 km long. It concerns the construction of four uneven junctions: Eleousa, Chalkidona, Paralimni and Giannitsa. The cost of the section is estimated at around 230m euros.
2. Montenegro – Edessa
Construction of a road section about 10 km long and four lanes wide, which includes two junctions (Rizari, Edessa) and junctions with the Old National Road. This section has a budget of 70 million euros.
The duration of the PPP project is estimated at 27 years, 4 of which are for the construction and commissioning of this new project. The axis is particularly important for road passenger and freight transport in the region of Central Macedonia.
