Brabant is the pumpkin province of the Netherlands
The pumpkin is becoming more popular. The number of companies growing the Halloween autumn fruit has increased by almost twenty percent in four years. North Brabant is the pumpkin province of the country, according to figures that LocalFocus requested from CBS.
The space that Dutch growers use for growing pumpkins has started with no less than 65 percent since 2018. So companies that have pumpkins in the field free up more ground for this.
Most pumpkin producers in Brabant
This is striking in the regional figures: in almost all provinces, the number of growers increased between 2018 and now. In Brabant you will find the master pumpkin producers – 85 companies – overview through Flevoland and Limburg. In 2018, Brabant still had 69 pumpkin producers. The Brabant leader was also in this respect.
In Flevoland and Limburg, by far the most agricultural land is used for the orange fruit. Flevoland tops the list with 359 hectares of ‘pumpkin soil’. In Limburg, 211 hectares of agricultural land are currently being used for pumpkin cultivation. In Brabant, this concerns 130 hectares, 45 hectares more than in 2018. Our province occupies fifth place.
Halloween
During Halloween, on October 31, pumpkins are hollowed out to make a lantern. The originally British and American horror day is also gaining ground in the Netherlands. In 2019, six percent of people indicated that they would celebrate Halloween, LocalFocus and Kieskompas found after a survey. This group was largest in South Holland at the time.
