Berger + Parkkinen plan in Salzburg / Sound research at the Mozarteum – Architecture and Architects – News / Announcements / News
The Mozarteum University in Salzburg is to receive a new music institute building that will be integrated into the structure built around the inner-city parks Kurgarten, Zwergerlgarten and Mirabellgarten. Not far from the main building of the music and arts college is the planned property in the northwest of the spa garden. The architects of the office Berger + Parkkinen (Vienna / Helsinki) Already know their way around here, as the Paracelsus bathroom they designed opened in the immediate vicinity in 2019.
The new music institute with the name UMAK, short for Universitt Mozarteum am Kurpark, serves the most urgent capacity expansion, at the same time a future-oriented orientation of the university. In addition to classrooms, rehearsal rooms and offices for the studio for electronic music, research workplaces are to be created here as well as a multimedia and digitization laboratory with the X-Reality-Lab. The laboratory, which is unique in Austria, sees itself as an artistic workshop and as a research and production space for audiovisual design. The Salzburg Bach Choir, which was previously homeless, is also to receive suitable rehearsal rooms.
Berger + Parkkinen envisage two structures for the UMAK, which should mediate between the closed and open development of the surrounding area. A new entrance space at the corner of Auerspergstrasse and Schwarzstrasse will open up both the university building and the Paracelsus bath. The upper floors of the music institute protrude over this forecourt and offer a view of the Kurhaus. The institute is accessible to the public on the ground floor; inside, a building-high atrium with skylights penetrates the structure. The second structure is connected to the larger house via a glass joint.
The facade is based on the Bder- und Kurhaus, the choice of materials is aimed at creating an ensemble character. The vertical ceramic slats of the Paracelsus bath can be found in the University of Music, but in a closed form as a partially full-surface, rear-ventilated ceramic facade. The slats in front of the slen are planned to be more open.
The new building project is expected to cost around 20 million. In addition to 1.5 million in its own funds, the federal government also controls the large share of 13.6 million. The state of Salzburg is taking over three million. Completion is planned for 2024. (sab)
