About 13 months after the catastrophic passage of the Mediterranean Cyclone (Medicane) “Janos” from our country, “Nearchos” was formed in the Southern Ionian on Thursday, October 28, 2021.
This time the forecast data show that our country is not significantly affected by this medicane, with Crete likely to receive rain in the coming days, but Malta and Sicily will be affected by stormy winds, higher coastal waves and heavy rainfall. .

What is the Mediterranean Cyclone or Medicane?
It is a barometric low that is created in the Mediterranean and acquires the characteristics of tropical cyclones.
Some of these features include the absence of frontal surfaces (cold and hot fronts), the creation of an “eye”, the prevalence of stormy winds and the occurrence of rapid rainfall near the center of the barometric system.

Who was Nearchus?
Nearchus was the commander of the fleet of Alexander the Great during his campaign in Asia.
The Cretan origin, son of Androtimos (probably from Lato). King Philip II exiled him to Amphipolis, as he himself had fallen into disfavor. It was later restored by Alexander and took over as governor of Lycia in Asia Minor.
