The article continues after the sound.
After the information that the Department of Theology of the University of Helsinki had specifically asked Finnish-speaking students to apply for jobs, we asked the Finnish Commissioner for Equality, Kristina Stenman, what people can do if they suspect unfair pay practices.
It’s not an easy way to fix these situations, but Stenman said several organizations can help. The unions, his office, and the state regional development agency (short for Avi) can all help.
The law is underway to change the complex process that currently depends on Avi taking the matter to court. But slow progress is happening, according to Stenman.
“We have employers who pilot, at least anonymously [recruitment], we have employers who try positive discrimination when trying to diversify their staff, so we have all kinds of positive moves. But the movement is too slow, ”Stenman said.
NATO riddle
We also report on the podcast from the Secretary General of NATO Jens StoltenbergVisited Helsinki earlier this week.
Stoltenberg will leave his post next year, but before that he will visit NATO members and partners, and few are as close as Finland.
In a joint press conference with the President Sauli Niinistö, Stoltenberg praised the common values and interoperability of the Finnish army and NATO, while Niinistö emphasized the so-called “spirit of Helsinki”, which is due to Finland’s role as a bridge between East and West.
However, the country is not a member of NATO, and Stoltenberg pointed out that this means that security guarantees do not extend to Finland.
“But of course there is a difference between membership and non-membership,” Stoltenberg said. “And the difference is Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, which says that an attack on one ally would be considered an attack on all allies. That collective defense clause does not apply to Finland.”
