He would have been 100 this year. Illustrious Toulouse photographer, Jean Dieuzaide will be the subject ofa great exhibition visible at Convent of the Jacobins from December 4. Initiated by the town hall of Toulouse, a retrospective will pay tribute to 60 years of photography of the artist. Note: to access this exhibition, visitors must present themselves at the entrance to the cloister with a valid health pass.

An unprecedented retrospective

This exhibition offers Toulouse residents the opportunity to discover sixty years of history in images through the lens of Jean Dieuzaide. The whole, in a Toulouse high place. Under the leadership of the historian Francoise Denoyelle, the Château d’Eau and the Municipal Archives have mobilized to present works from the reserves of the city of Toulouse, but also from public institutions and private collectors.

Dali in the water, The Little Girl with the Rabbit, or La Gitane du Sacromonte… Some pictures are iconic. The richness of the fund will also allow the exhibition of photographs little revealed, even never exhibited until now. Audiovisual archives will be added to this retrospective, to the delight of image lovers. In all, the exhibition offers 148 works and 81 documents.

Who was Jean Dieuzaide?

Jean Dieuzaide was born in the town of Grenade-sur-Garonne, near Toulouse, June 20, 1921. The illustrious photographer began his career shortly before the Second World War. I also photograph General de Gaulle during the liberation of Toulouse. A portrait that propelled his career. From then on, he devoted his whole life to the recognition of his art. This specialist in architecture and particularly in Romanesque Art, has at the same time carried out an illustrator activity for many French and foreign publishers.

Spain, Portugal, Turkey… The work he has done around the world has earned him the reputation of “humanist photographer“. He was also the author of an important plastic research around still life. Le Toulousain is also at the origin of the foundation of the municipal gallery of the Château d’Eau, in 1974 in Toulouse. It became the first public gallery exclusively dedicated to photography exhibition in France. Jean Dieuzaide bowed out on September 18, 2003. He left behind 60 years of exceptional photographs. His work is estimated at nearly a million negatives. He remains today the only photographer holding the two Niepce and Nadar awards, presented as the Goncourt or the Renaudot of photography.
