The “clients” of prostitution in Portugal are increasingly younger – Notícias de Coimbra
The average age of sex buyers within Portugal and only 15% favors the recognition of prostitution as a professional activity. This is a conclusion to be made. “Diagnostic Study on Women in the Prostitution System in Lisbon”
This is an initiative of the Exit project, the content of which will be presented at the International Seminar of the Portuguese Platform for Women’s Rights, which will take place on October 29, 2021, at Brotéria – Centro Cultural, in São Pedro de Alcântara, in Lisbon .
The Portuguese Platform for Women’s Rights publishes the results of the diagnostic study on women in the prostitution system in Lisbon, with the main objective of making known the prostitution system in the city, in the dual aspect of the interveners and the organization within the same system.
Some of the large organizations in this study are that, of the surveys, 79% remain in the prostitution system in Lisbon, and the profile of domestic sex buyers, there is an increase in the number of young boys who buy sex, either in “recreational” contexts. ”, either via the Internet.
From a universe of 38 interviewees, aged between 24 and 77 years old, the legal framework for prostitution is the only point that differs from those indicated. The reference to human rights and the dignity of people is central to the discourse of those who defend abolitionism. Of the total number of respondents, only 15% are in favor of recognizing prostitution as a professional activity.
These and other schools will attend the International Seminar of the Portuguese Platform for Women’s Rights, which will be held on October 29, 2021, at Brotéria – Centro Cultural, in São Pedro de Alcântara, in Lisbon. Starting at 10.15 am, an opening session will feature Ana Sofia Fernandes, President of the Portuguese Platform for Women’s Rights, Ellen Aabø, In charge of Business at the Norwegian Embassy in Portugal, Lina Lopes, Chair of the Subcommittee on Equality and Non-Discrimination of the Assembly of the Republic, and Rosa Monteiro, Secretary of State for Citizenship and Equality.
During the day of the Conference, the documentary produced by the Platform will be shown, “Consent is not purchased” and topics such as “Sexual Exploitation: A universal violation of Women’s Human Rights and an obstacle to Equality between women and men” will be discussed. , “Results and products of the EXIT I project Human rights of women not to be prostituted” and “EXIT shaping public policies at local and national level: what do public administration officials say?”.

Ana Sofia Fernandes, President of the Portuguese Platform for Women’s Rights highlights “the importance of studies like this one to understand the violence and the network that still exists in Lisbon. With first-person testimonies, we expand our voice to those who know the system well, thus contributing to a better clarification and debater in the public sphere about this system and what it underlies. We hope that these results will lead us towards the abolition of the prostitution system in Portugal”.
This analysis is drawn into five main areas: Life stories and trajectories of women in prostitution, sex buyers, professionals who deal with the prostitution system, the relationship of social communication with the prostitution system. Public Policy recommendations, developed based on it, were also included.
The study is integrated into the EXIT | HUMAN RIGHTS OF WOMEN NOT TO BE PROSTITUTED, which aims to contribute to a better understanding of the prostitution system and, in particular, the surrounding violence. Using the detachment and analysis of the Portuguese media, this study deepens the knowledge about the established prostitution system, in the voice of several women in a situation of prostitution and professionals who deal with the system.
