Prague: Pavel was born with a horse’s foot, now a half marathon has passed!
About 200 children are born annually in the Czech Republic with a similar foot defect. While many of them used to end up with crutches or wheelchairs, today’s modern methods give them hope for a completely normal life.
Although the feet of babies look menacing after birth, you won’t even know it in many adults. “But it is important to start treatment early,” says Stanislava Bašatová, the founder of the Achilleus association, which helps families.
Don’t give up
Paul’s story can be a hope for many children and their parents. After birth, his left leg was completely twisted. “Dad practiced a lot with me. When it meant a lot of pain and a lot of groaning, it paid off and I’m grateful to him. “ he says. Before that, as a toddler for several weeks, he underwent tendon surgery. “Today, more modern and effective surgical treatment is used. The feet are plastered or placed in a special plate, “ describes the director of the Achilleus association.
Move through the pain
How challenging was Paul’s exercise? “Dad turned my leg on the other side so that she would be active and not stun. That her momentum was right, “ Paul describes. Thanks to the care of parents and doctors, they go normally today. However, little was missing and he might not stand up and take a step.
Fateful meeting with the coach
The biggest breakthrough in sports performances was Pavel’s fateful meeting with the coach of a healthy lifestyle, Hanka. “She helped me lose 12 kilos in weight, I learned to eat, drink and cleanse my body properly. She has the biggest share in my progress. I appreciate it and I’m forever grateful to her. “ explains a man for whom it is not a problem to ride, for example, 200 kilometers by bike in addition to the half marathon.
Rehabilitation is a sport
Pavel Vrtiška created his own way of rehabilitation. “It’s a sport. I played football, tennis, ping-pong and I ride a bike a lot, “ describing. And he got into it. “I ran my first half marathon two years ago. I ran the second one in Olomouc this year, “ he boasted. However, he admitted that he had a bit of a balance problem. “I may have some limitations. On the other hand, I got the skis and the snowboard under control, “ Laughs.
Why do they have a year of deformed legs?
The shortened Achilles tendon, together with the internal ligaments and tendons, which pull the foot into the stored position, is responsible for the deformation of the legs. In the past, the vast majority of children underwent surgery. But now it’s different. Small patients are waiting after several series of casts, in which doctors gradually compare births. Then special splints come on. At the beginning, children wear them 23 hours a day, gradually decreasing time. Operations are therefore only necessary in exceptional cases.
