Jannik Sinner advances to Vienna and is a candidate for the ATP Finals
TENNIS – Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego fly to the round of 16 of the ATP 500 in Vienna. All easy for the Italian tennis players, who in just over an hour beat Reilly Opelka (6-4, 6-2) and Dominik Koepfer (6-4, 6-3) respectively in two sets. For Sinner it is a fundamental victory for the race at the ATP Finals in Turin. The South Tyrolean takes advantage of Monday’s elimination in the first round of Hurkacz and earns fundamental points in the race. The blue, who will face Novak, keeps pace with Ruud, who will meet Sonego in the second round. Both will be on the pitch on Thursday.
Jannik Sinner towards the ATP Finals
Sinner is number 11 ATP (new best ranking) and number 7 in seeding. Fresh from his triumph in Antwerp (fourth title in 2021) he is in full swing for the Nitto ATP Finals. It literally has annihilated Opelka in just 68 minutes of the game, n.27 ATP, in a sort of “technical test” of Davis Cup Finals. Absolutely devastating in response the blue, who also served very well, conceding only six points to his opponent. In the second round, on Thursday, Sinner will find Austrian Dennis Novak on the other side of the net, number 116 in the ranking, in the race thanks to a wild card, which stopped Gianluca Mager at the debut, number 68 ATP, from qualifications. There is no precedent between the South Tyrolean and the 28-year-old from Wiener Neustadt, the only home player on the draw.
Berrettini is already in Turin
Certainly already participated in the ATP Finals in Turin is Matteo Berrettini. The Roman, beating the Australian Alexei Popyrin in the first round on Monday, n.77 ATP, passed through the qualifiers, won the pass. The tennis player coached by coach Vincenzo Santopadre is the first blue to reach the goal twice (he had already succeeded in London 2019). Berrettini, n.7 in the world ranking and third favorite in seeding, a place in the quarters is played with the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, 25 ATP: the blue number one won in three of the four previous challenges (all the last three) on the 29-year-old from Tbilisi but this is their first confrontation on the fast indoor.

Bitter debut in the ATP 500 in Vienna for Fabio Fognini, eliminated in the first round by Diego Schwartzman. The Ligurian tennis player, who alternates great shots with sensational skids in the second set (especially in the last two games, the decisive ones), loses 6-2, 7-5 in a match of one hour and thirty-one minutes with the Argentine, who he recovers after the final lost three days ago in Antwerp against Sinner.
Schwartzman thus enters the second round and will meet the winner between Gael Monfils and Lorenzo Musetti.
