Family leave cost more than expected
More than 18 months after the implementation of exceptional financial support measures to fight the pandemic, the time has come to take stock in Luxembourg. Meeting under the chairmanship of Social Security Minister Romain Schneider, the quadripartite committee delivered several figures on the budget for health and maternity insurance.
Thus, family leave, from which many employees have benefited, cost the State 298 million euros for the years 2020 and 2021. This is 48 million more than the budget estimated in 2020 (250 million euros). euros). On the other hand, the cash sickness benefit amounted to 132 million for the period from April 1 to June 30, 2020. Less than the 149 million initially estimated. Note that the leave for family support also cost less than expected (500,000 euros instead of 1 million).
“Responding to a health crisis of exceptional magnitude”
Unsurprisingly, the financial situation of health and maternity insurance shows negative operating income of 100.8 million euros for fiscal year 2021. The 4.9% increase in revenue, the result of a favorable economic context, will not be enough to offset the 6.9% increase in spending in 2021. Despite this situation, the Minister welcomed the ability of the Luxembourg State to manage a crisis situation.
“The financial reserves at the level of health and maternity insurance, which have been achieved in recent years thanks to prudent management, have made it possible to respond quickly to a health crisis of exceptional magnitude. A financial and final inventory will be made once the situation of the health crisis has been overcome, in order to assess whether a new allocation from the State is necessary ”, declared Romain Schneider.
