Engel becomes new children’s mayor of Amsterdam
Twelve-year-old Angel will be the new children’s mayor of Amsterdam next year. This afternoon they were chosen and they received congratulations from alderman Marjolein Moorman (Education). Engel is in group 8 of primary school Nellestein in Zuidoost. OOn Tuesday 2 November it will be drawn up together with the new children’s council.
Angel: “I was born in Indonesia and have lived in the Netherlands for three years. I had to learn the language and have plans for Amsterdam. More trees and flowers should be allowed in the city: biodiversity and greenery are important in the city. I also want to commit myself to safety and, for example, special traffic lights with smileys can be installed. Especially with fast e-bikes it is sometimes not safe. In summary: the city can be happier, happier and safer.”
Role of children’s mayor and children’s council
The children’s mayor tells the municipal executive what children find important and what their wishes are. He is assisted in this by the children’s council. The children’s mayor meets the mayor of an alderman, goes to special events and sometimes gives a short speech. The members of the children’s council ensure that the wishes of children are placed on the agenda of Amsterdam politics. They draw up a list of topics that they consider important and think about how things can be improved in the city. They meet twelve times. The members of the children’s council also act as deputy mayor on occasion.
New children’s mayor and children’s council
The term of the current children’s mayor Dominic and the children’s council expires on November 2. That is why the municipality of Amsterdam has been looking for a new children’s mayor and new members for the children’s council in recent weeks. Amsterdam students from groups 7 and 8 could sign up for this. A jury, consisting of children’s ombudsman Anne Martien van der Does, the current children’s mayor Dominic and Het Klokhuis presenter Pascal Tan, made a choice based on all entries. The new children’s councilors have chosen who will be the children’s mayor.
