“Education to change the world”: in Venice the speech by Simone from Loverese, best student of Ca ‘Foscari
One cannot but be amazed listening to Simone. Young people of value like him, always ready to live in the game with commitment, passion and humility, to become a fundamental resource for the country, a heritage to be valued in order to build a prosperous present and future.
Simone Canu, 22 years old from Loverese, born in 1999, he graduated with full marks in economics and commerce, obtaining an evaluation of 110 and honors from the Ca ‘Foscari University of Venice, which named him the best Italian student of the 2020-21 summer session. The award was given to him at the graduation day ceremony, which took place in Piazza San Marco: in this beautiful location, crowded with students and families, his mother was also listening to him. Susanna and grandmother Marisa, 89 years old, arrived for him from Lovere.
THE SPEECH – From the stage of this ceremony Simone gave an exciting speech talking about “luck and the responsibilities that derive from it”. Drawing some very interesting parallels, he has indicators that one of his greatest fortunes was the opportunity to have attended Ca ‘Foscari, which “allowed him to get to know and experience one of the most magnificent cities in the world”, an opportunity from which “Strong responsibilities arise”, considering that “Venice is as unique as it is fragile and it is up to us as individuals, as a community and as institutions to take care of it”.
Another fortune is the possibility of having been able to spend a period of study abroad thanks to the programs that Ca ‘Foscari has made available for him and other students: “I firmly believe that traveling, learning about new cultures, people and landscapes is a great privilege from which derives the responsibility to respect the teaching that these have given us “- Simone experimented, adding:” We are not only Italian citizens or citizens of our country of belonging, but we are also European citizens and citizens of the world, of consequently the problems and needs of others are also ours ”.
Continuing his speech, he cited the greatest fortune: education. “I feel lucky – he underlined – because at Ca ‘Foscari I received a very valid education both in terms of theoretical and practical teaching and in terms of values. Ca ‘Foscari has prepared us in the best way possible for our working and academic future but education ends in the opportunity it creates, there must also be responsibility. come on said Nelson Mandela in one of his most famous interventions, education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world and I believe that there is no truer sentence than this. We have been living for almost two years in a pandemic that day after day does nothing but increase the social and economic inequalities that already plagued our society before. Education is the most efficient means of combating inequalities, discrimination, racism and all violations of human rights. The good fortune we have here is that we have such great potential that we can and can get our selfish selves our communal selves. Wanting to achieve one’s personal goals and ambitions, in a selfish sense, is human and right. I myself feel like an ambitious person who wants to achieve many personal goals in life but each of us must choose their education and their potential for community, fighting against any kind of inequality, discrimination and human rights and the planet “.
In the wake of the positive impact that individual knowledge can have on our society, he concluded his speech by wishing everyone to be able to “satisfy their highest ambitions and at the same time devote themselves to the community, the planet, the weakest and the most discriminated against “.

THE COMMENT – Contacted by Bergamonews, Simone states: “Taking part in the ceremony in Piazza San Marco was very emotional and I am honored to have received such an important recognition. Graduation represents a fundamental stage in the life of a person who decides to continue their studies after high school. Undertaking a university path is not only important at the academic level, because at the university you do not study only to prepare for exams but you carry out a school of life: it is a path that is faced together with people who have interests, backgrounds, ambitions and goals different. Of the years spent at Ca ‘Foscari, not only the study and the notions acquired remain but the experience itself, the people I met and everything that gravitates around the university such as student associations and, more generally, student life, opportunity to experience Venice and get to know its university system “.
Talking about himself, he explains: “I was born and raised in Lovere, where I attended elementary school, middle school and the scientific high school Decio Celeri, enriching my high school education with an experience in the United States. When the time came to enroll in university, at first I was not sure whether to choose economics and commerce: it was one of the sectors that might interest me but as is generally the case at that age I had no clear ideas. However, I decided to opt for this one because it is able to lead a course of multiple specializations and has a markedly international character, it allows you to travel and experience abroad “.
“In addition to devoting myself to school – continues Simone talking about his hobbies – since I was a boy I have cultivated various interests. I am a very sporty person: for me sport is everything, not only for the physical but also for the mental well-being … after a busy day doing some physical activity helps me to relax. Furthermore, I love going out with friends, listening to music and reading novels: day by day I like to carve out time for these passions in an extremely versatile way “.
Looking at his next projects, however, he adds: “I have a very international but at the same time European horizon. It would certainly be nice to work in Europe: I lived in Madrid for six months during the triennial and I liked Spain a lot. Now I have a bachelor’s degree in economics and commerce at Ca ‘Foscari and I have enrolled at the University of San Gallo in Switzerland for the master’s degree in international management, a very stimulating course of study capable of leading to various professional outlets. From a professional point of view, in the future I would like to become a manager or CEO and take care of the management of a company “.
Finally, reflecting on Italy’s ability to offer young people opportunities to build a future, Simone concludes: “Our country has a lot of potential and various aspects to improve, especially looking at the new generations. For example, having acquired work experience in one’s sector represents an important added value for entering companies. And this is why companies are generally looking for young people who have already carried out the duties which they procure. If it is more convenient for a student to do other jobs rather than internships related to their training, however, it becomes more difficult to fit in. Often many are left stupid by the fact that young people struggle to take a seat in the world of work but are not encouraged to do so: there is a lot of hypocrisy on the subject but the search for economic stability is important and should not be underestimated. This is why many often go abroad where they receive higher remuneration and perhaps the cost of living is not so high “.
All that remains is to wish Simone a big good luck wishing him to achieve all his goals.
