If the imminent arrival of the famous “Lady and the unicorn” at the museum of Slaughterhouses is going to be one of the cultural attractions of the end of the year 2021 to Toulouse, an unprecedented exhibition will soon take place in the Pink City.
More than 200 works exhibited
To favor the centenary of the birth of Jean Dieuzaide, a large exhibition dedicated to the illustrious photographer from Toulouse will take place in a majestic place, the Convent of the Jacobins, from December 4, 2021 to March 6, 2022.
In this retrospective entitled “Jean Dieuzaide, 60 years of photography”, more than 200 works and archives, sometimes unpublished, from municipal funds, public and private institutions and collectors.
Who was Jean Dieuzaide?

Born in Grenade-sur-Garonne in 1921, Jean Dieuzaide – then a very young photographer – covered the liberation of Toulouse in August 1944 and managed the following month, hidden in the military ranks, to shoot the first official portrait of General de Gaulle, then head of the provisional government visiting the Pink City.
Under the family pressure which disapproves of this choice of career, he signs his reports under the pseudonym of “Yan”, (Jean en Gascon) his childhood nickname which he kept until 1971. A real daredevil, he photographed in 1954 a marriage of tightrope walkers, carried on the shoulders of the father of the bride, fifteen meters above the Place du Capitole.
He is also known for having produced a series of famous portraits of Salvador Dalí. He was honored with the Niépce Prize in 1955 and the Nadar Prize in 1961.
Subsequently, this much sought-after photographer – who traveled to many countries around the world – will work to make photography an eminent art and become more than an ambassador. Founding member of the Rencontres Internationales de la Photo d’Arles, he opened in 1974 in Toulouse the Municipal Gallery of the Water Tower, the first museum entirely dedicated to photographic exhibitions which welcomed the greatest signatures under its rule.
Another exhibition in the City

While waiting for the opening of this event exhibition at the Jacobins, around thirty photographs signed Jean Dieuzaide are to be discovered in different places of Toulouse on December 4, 2021. Because Jean Dieuzaide was also very interested in Toulouse, which he loved and knew so well.
This route concocted by the Municipal Archives guides the visitor in the artist’s footsteps, virtually via the site urban-hist.toulouse.fr, but also in the streets of the city to discover about thirty large-format photographic prints installed in ten different sites: the arcades of the Capitol, the Victor Hugo market, Jean-Jaurès (ex-UGC), Halle aux grains, museum of Augustins, 2 rue Joutx-Aigues, Water tower, Les Jacobins, the Carmelite market and ENSEIIHT.
