To achieve herd immunity, at least 85 percent of people with mild, high levels of antibodies are needed, immunologist Nikolai Kryuchkov explained in a conversation with Lenta.ru. He admits that the ever-changing coronavirus is far from the only reason the country is failing to cope with the epidemic.
Ancha Baranova, professor at the School of Systems Biology at George Mason University in Virginia, Chief Researcher at the Laboratory of Functional Genomics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, previously told why there is no collective immunity to coronavirus in Russia. She believes that this was due to the “low” rates of vaccination and the variability of the coronavirus. She recalled that the “delta” strain of the effectiveness of the virus, which reduced the drugs, began to spread in the world.
Kryuchkov that the coronavirus is changing not only in Russia, but throughout the world, and this is not surprising: evolution is a natural process. In this hemisphere, the “delta” strain has become dominant, in the other it shares the palm with other variations and continues to change everywhere.
“Where most of the population is vaccinated, the virus mutates more slowly and the condition is more under control. So to consider the only permanent changes, strains, must still be considered with the infected, the number of vaccinated, the number of those who have already lost protection from the virus. In our country, according to the best estimates, 40-45 percent of the population has immunity, at least 85 percent, ”the doctor said.
The immunologist also added that many believe that herd immunity will be achieved when most of the population is vaccinated. Actually this is not true.
“What is needed is not just their positive level, but a high one, especially not a weakly positive one,” said Kryuchkov. – Only in this case the pandemic will subside. In Great Britain, for example, the percentage of vaccinated people is very high, but the country has not managed to defeat the epidemic, because immunity in people is gradually weakening. “
Earlier, the operational headquarters to combat the spread of coronavirus began to publish information on the level of vaccination and herd immunity in Russia. So, vaccination against COVID-19 was done 53,511,786 times, the full cycle was vaccinated 49,161,150 times.
