27.10.2021 14:27 | Press Release
Today, with the laying of the new thirteen Stolpersteins – Stones of the Disappeared, Prague 2 commemorated the victims of the Holocaust and the Nazi regime, who had not returned to their homes. The mayor of Prague 2, Jana Černochová, together with Deputy Mayor Jaroslav Šolc and Councilor Michal Zuna, have traditionally paid homage to their memory.
The stones were added to Fügner Square, Rašínovo nábřeží, Gorazdova, Vinohradská or U Kanálky streets. Cubes with a brass surface are traditionally placed in the sidewalks in front of the houses, which were the last refuge for the victims of the Holocaust and the Nazi regime. Each such cube is thus a reminder of a specific troubled human destiny.
“The project, which is supposed to make us take a short stop and think here here at Dvojka, is definitely fulfilling its purpose, and laying new stones has already become a tradition, which we also support at the town hall in the form of grants. This year, we supported the placement of stones in U Kanálky Street with the amount of 20 thousand crowns, and we spent another 25 thousand crowns on the annual care and maintenance of the Stolpersteins in Prague 2, “said Jana Černo in Prague 2.
The author of the project, the Cologne artist Gunter Demnig, first came up with the idea in 1993. The very first so-called Stolperstein was laid in 1996 in Kreuzberg, Berlin. The project soon spread throughout the world.
The idea of launching a project in the Czech Union of Jewish Youth from the Czech Union of Jewish Youth, the first stones were revived in the country to the Prague sidewalks in October 2008. In 2018, after two years of inactivity, František Bányai was chairman people holocaust. The association also assesses individual requests of survivors to build and lay new stones. The whole process of applying, documenting documents and hand-made stone by the sculptor takes over a year after the stone has been placed on the sidewalk. There are currently 400 Stones Disappeared in Prague and hundreds more are scattered throughout the Czech Republic.
