Irish player reviews: Connolly, O’Sullivan and McCabe on a great night in Helsinki
This is how Girls in Green evaluates her 2023 World Cup qualifier victory from Finland in Helsinki.
Courtney Brosnan 8
Like his side, he has risen from a rocky period in his copper fastening, retaining the number one shirt. Dominant in several air strikes from the Finnish side, which repeatedly fired crosses in his direction.
Niamh Fahey 8
Rescued an almost certain goal in the second half and struck several other challenges to complete a significant defensive performance when needed, especially in a desperate late rescue.
Louise Quinn 7
He stood up once as last Thursday and he and Fahey got entangled, allowing Koivisto a free butt in the second half, but otherwise he made a handsome presence against the tenacious Finns.
Savannah McCarthy 7
Last week has finally turned out to be an adult part-time employee who has established his position in defense in the roar of Diane Caldwell’s support force.
Subject O’Gorman 7
He still defies prejudices and his rush forward was important in curbing Finnish progress. He was key in the fight to win the ball and eventually score the winning goal.
Megan Connolly 9
Outstanding performance in midfield, while not detrimental to combining forward passes, ended up with a great free kick that was only his second goal in 30 matches.
Jamie Finn 8
A player who has shown the progress that can be made when a player leaves his home country. Finn returned to a more orthodox midfield position after temporarily moving to the right defender last week and working tirelessly and not without skill.
Denise O’Sullivan 9
O’Sullivan squeezed worries after his elbow knocked last Thursday, and while the impact of the exploitation scandal that conquered his American employer clearly affected O’Sullivan, mostly as a more mobile outlet on the left, enjoyed that freedom and ultimately his crown goal. . Strong riggers beat and teased, but remained upright.
Katie McCabe 9
The Arsenal star enjoys a rich form with the club and the country, and his skills with the league leaders clearly feed into his international form. She is in a contented place at the moment and her charming enthusiasm is typical of her joy.
Lucy Quinn 7
Another tireless effort from the recently acquired international scorer, which is still a smart linking option in the still-emerging feed pattern as well as making unused runs for the volunteers. Key to another goal, but one reservation away from the ban.
Heather Payne 7
Pace is still an important asset for this team, and his ability to deliver a very apt lattice as he devilishly licked the ball over the goal, brought the winner to ruin. Also a key role in winning a free kick to Connolly’s howitzer.
Compensatory: Rianna Jarrett 6
The last 15 minutes came ostensibly as an exit, but asked to stop the rushing flow of Finnish danger.
Managers: Vera Pauw 8
He stuck firmly to his theory that exposing Ireland to fierce resistance, as well as inviting ridicule, would steep his team to such challenges as in Helsinki on Tuesday night. With this evidence, his risky gambit has paid early dividends.
