Zverev is missing from Germany in the Davis Cup in Innsbruck
Olympic champion Alexander Zverev’s waiver of participation in this year’s Davis Cup final tournament is official. The world number four is missing from the line-up, which team boss Michael Kohlmann announced on Monday for the event from November 25th to December 5th in Innsbruck, where Germany will meet Austria and Serbia in the preliminary round in the Olympic Hall.
Jan-Lennard Struff, Dominik Köpfer and returnees Peter Gojowczyk are nominated. Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz belong to the team as double specialists. In addition, Zverev’s team boss Kohlmann can bet on the best-placed German players in the world rankings.
Austria’s team will compete in the final tournament in Innsbruck with Dennis Novak, Jurij Rodionov, Gerald Melzer and the experienced doubles Oliver Marach / Philipp Oswald. Dominic Thiem and Sebastian Ofner are not available injured. The group winners and the two best runners-up move into the quarter-finals, which the Germans would also contest in Innsbruck. Other venues are Turin and Madrid, where the semi-finals and finals also take place.
Zver tells about the new format
Zverev has been presenting the format since the beginning and was not there two years ago when the Germans were eliminated in the quarter-finals. It was only at the weekend that the 24-year-old confirmed that he did not want to take part in the Davis Cup final tournament. Contrary to what has been practiced for years, the Davis Cup has no longer been held in the respective participating countries over the year since 2019.
