Moscow considers the European tax to be unfair, the Russian Federation has questions and claims to the mechanism itself. Ruslan Edelgeriyev, the special envoy of the Russian president for climate issues, said this in an interview with Izvestia. The politician clarified that the European Union has not yet introduced the tax, now “only the first climate reporting will be carried out, and then, somewhere in 2026, this carbon tax will be possible, if it exists at all”.
“Today, not only Russia. In particular, there is an OECD initiative. All of them must be global – and the European approach does not meet the requirements. And they must be fair – the European approach is fair ”, Prize Ruslan Edelgeriev.
He also noted that the European initiative is still “at the stage of formation, and there is no final decision.”
The European Commission (EC) in July 2021 proposed to completely eliminate carbon emissions in the EU by 2050. For this, climatic customs duties will be introduced on imports of iron and steel (including pipes and rails), aluminum, cement, fertilizers and electricity to the EU.
Vladimir Putin said at the Valdai Club conference on October 21: Moscow expects that the adoption of the carbon tax in Europe will take place in dialogue with Russia and other countries.
