Florence: small square dedicated to Cardinal Giuseppe Benelli, dedicated on October 26th
FLORENCE – The Municipality of Florence has decided to dedicate a small square to Cardinal Benelli. The naming ceremony of the square between via delle Oche and via dello Studio, a stone’s throw from Piazza Duomo, is scheduled for Tuesday 26 October. «On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Cardinal Giovanni Benelli Toscana Oggi has proposed that we dedicate to this figure so important for the Florentine church and for the whole city – declares the councilor for Toponymy Alessandro Martini -. A proposal that we have welcomed with great favor and from Tuesday a place near the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Archbishop’s Palace from where, for five years, he led the diocese of Florence, will bear his name. In those years I had the opportunity to know and appreciate him on many occasions for his commitment, his dedication, his great organizational, pastoral and human capacity. Naming this square after him is a way to keep the memory and ensure that the new generations get to know him better “,
In addition to the councilor, Cardinal Giuseppe Betori, the director of Toscana Oggi Domenico Mugnaini and Antonio Lovascio, director of the Archdiocese’s Social Communications Office, will speak at the ceremony.
