Pedro Figueiredo gains confidence for Portugal Masters | Golf
Pedro Figueiredo finished the Mallorca Open on a high note today, with a final result of 66 strokes at Golf Santa Ponsa (par 70), in Mallorca, in the Spanish Balearic Islands, a punctuation which was only surpassed by the 64 of the English Laurie Canter and the 65 of the American John Catlin. There was a lot of wind this Sunday, as it had happened on the second day, Friday, and the Portuguese climbed 19 positions to finish in the group of 26th classified in this European Tour event, endowed with 1 million euros of cash prize and with 120 competitors at the start.
It was so difficult, that the Dane Jeff Winther won with a final round of 70 for a total of 265, that is, with the same 15 strokes under par that added up to 54 holes. I had left for the last lap to lead with two shots ahead of Spaniard Jorge Campillo, who would not go beyond 69 to share second place with compatriot Pep Angles (67) and Swede Sebastian Soderbgerg (68), a trio 266 (-14).
“It was a good tournament, I played really well these four days”, said Figgy, continuing: “It was a growing tournament too, I was always improving the result in each lap. I played very well, especially from the tee, which used to be my Achilles heel. I was pretty good with the driver, which makes the rest of the game easier afterwards. And I was consistent, I didn’t make many mistakes, I missed some putts during the four days but I can’t complain. I did well in all parts of the game, so I was happy with this performance and it gives me confidence for the Portugal Masters. ”
It was, in fact, a race that kept rising in Majorca: he started in the 82nd group, after a 71 (+1) first lap, rose to 59th in the second with an excellent 70 (par) under difficult conditions, passing the cut unlimited; and in the third he scored 68 (-2) jumping to 45th. When the curtain came down, a 66 (-4) that was only beaten by two players and equaled by the English Andrew Johnstone (7th), the South African Jacques Kruyswijk (16th), the Scot Connor Syme (26th). ) ) and the Chinese Zheng-kai Bai.
There were 72 players in the finals of the tournament, over the weekend, which Ricardo Santos, eliminated by the cut – fixed at 141 (+1) – with two turns from 72 and 71 to 143 (+3).
Figueiredo earned a prize of 8,982 euros and rose from 209th to 200th in the Race to Dubai. Ricardo Santos dropped four positions to 170th. Both are betting heavily on the €1.5 million Portugal Masters, the next and third to last tournament of the season on the circuit, from 4th to 7th November at Dom Pedro Victoria, in Vilamoura.
As for Jeff Winther, he scored 62 twice (in the first and third days) towards his first European Tour title, which earned him a prize of 150,940 euros.
