ATP Vienna, because Berrettini and Sonego can become Sinner’s great allies towards the Finals. The scenarios of the board – OA Sport
Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Sonego on the path of Jannik Sinner’s opponents for the ATP Finals. This is the situation that arises in Vienna. Inside the Wiener Stadthalle, or the secondary field according to the decisions of the ATP 500 management of the Austrian capital, this will be one of the possible scenarios that will be seen on a kind of double track tournament-Race.
It cannot be said that Berrettini’s path is the easiest: it is true that the Roman starts against a qualified, net of the possible hidden pitfalls in this sense, but it is equally true that on the second turn the Georgian’s danger Nikoloz Basilashvili it’s important. Many are looking to a possible quarter with the Pole Hubert Hurkacz, current number 9 of the Race (and 8 by removing Nadal), who, however, will have suffered in Andy Murray a complicated opponent, although he has already beaten the Scotsman twice this year with an identikit score: 7-6 (4) 6-3. Further down are the British Cameron Norrie (10th) and the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime (12th), but only one of the two will reach the semifinals and above all there will be time, if necessary, to think about them.
For his part, Sonego defends the final, which is not just any result. And this will be his first reason for thinking when he enters the field again in Vienna, against the Chilean Cristian Garin. Yes, he could face the Norwegian Casper Ruud (7th), in the Race and suffering player, from which he has twice between 2020 and 2021. The latter, however, is immediately called to the hard confrontation with the South African Lloyd Harris, which only a Sinner (11th) deluxe has stopped in Antwerp. There could be the derby with the South Tyrolean in the quarterfinals, but, even more so in this case, the Turin player will think about all the questions match after match.
It should certainly not be forgotten that we are dealing with a very strong scoreboard for a 500, so much so that the definitions have been wasted. “Tournament of the year”, for the category, is the most popular: it is certain that if it were suddenly decided to raise the category of this event to a non-existent ATP 750 moment, no one would have had anything against it. Vienna, moreover, also takes advantage of a lucky coincidence for her, namely the fact that Basel did not play in 2020 and 2021, and the only competing event remained St. Petersburg, which returned to the status of 250.
