UEFA coefficient: fortunately Belgium can count on the Conference League – foot national
A win, a split and two painful defeats against Premier League clubs. Here is the (sad) assessment of the week of our Belgian clubs engaged on the European scene. And this inevitably has consequences on our coefficient.
After this new week on the continental scene, the Belgian clubs returned home with mixed feelings. With only one victory and one draw in four games, that means that the Belgian coefficient has taken a hit.
These results bring us only 0.6 points for the coefficient (0.4 for the Ghent victory at Partizan Belgrade and 0.2 for the division snatched by Antwerp from Fenerbahçe). La Gantoise remains the only club to achieve a clear round in the Conference League and allows our country to keep its head above water after this difficult week.
Antwerp and Geneva will also have an interest in stepping up their game, as their contribution to the coefficient is almost negligible. With Anderlecht, who are already finished in the Conference League, they have only recovered 25% of the total Belgian coefficient this year. Club Brugge and the Buffalos having brought in 75% of the stake.
It is therefore thanks to La Gantoise and a Conference League, a little less rapporteur than its two colleagues, that Belgium remains in the process in Europe. Even if, despite their disappointing results, Antwerp and Genk can still aspire to make it through the European winter, whether by staying in the Europa League or being transferred to the Conference League (in case of 3rd place in their group).
The explanation of how the coefficient is calculated can be found at the bottom of this article.
club | Points | Coefficient | Explanations |
FC Bruges | 7 | 1,400 | 4 points of participation in the CL; 1 point for the draw against PSG; 2 points for the victory against RB Leipzig. |
KRC Genk | 2 | 0.400 | 2 points for the victory against Rapid Vienna. |
Antwerp | 2 | 0.400 | 1 point for qualification in EL; 1 point for the draw against Fenerbahçe. |
The Gantoise | 9.5 | 1,900 | 3 points for the 3 victories in the preliminary rounds of the Conference League; 0.5 point for a draw in ECL; 6 points for the 3 group victories of the ECL |
Anderlecht | 2.5 | 0.500 | 2 points for 2 victories in the preliminary rounds of the ECL; 0.5 point for a draw in the ECL preliminaries (against Vitesse) |
Total | 20 | 4,600 |
But the 0.6 points we won this week do not help us regain a more enviable place in the UEFA rankings. The victory of La Gantoise against the Serbian Partizan has in any case made it possible to take six points at two levels: first in his own group and then in the classification of the coefficient. Indeed, Serbia is ranked just above Belgium and thanks to the Buffalo victory, our country has managed to catch up a little of its delay on the Balkan country. All points are worth their weight in gold to move up to a tenth place which offers the prospect of a direct ticket to the CL in 2022/23.
To gain three additional places in the standings, our clubs must pass Serbia, Ukraine and Russia. What results have these nations achieved this week? Let’s start with the Serbs. Apart from Partizan, all hopes were on the Red Star, the only other Serbian club remaining in Europe. The latter did not win their Europa League match against the Danes of Midtjylland (1-1). However, a draw gives Serbia more points than Belgium, as they started the campaign with four clubs and our country for five. In total, Serbia has therefore gained only 0.25 points this week, a good choice for our football.
A floor higher, Ukraine still has three entered on the continental scene, even two of them clubs, acquire the Champions League and it is not easy to take points there. Shakhtar Donetsk (swept 0-5 against Real Madrid) and Dynamo Kiev (lost 1-0 against Barcelona) lost their matches. In the Conference League, Zorya Louhansk had to save the Ukrainian honor and did so by winning over CSKA Sofia (0-1). This week, Ukraine therefore gleaned 0.4 points, which is again good news for Belgium.
Finally, Russia is currently carrying out a very poor European campaign. They’ve only got 2.5 points so far and this week hasn’t helped matters as Zenit lost 0-1 to Juventus, Spartak Moscow, 3-4 to Leicester and Lokomotiv Moscow, 0-1 against Galatasaray. Once again, this is positive for Belgium. But, we can legitimately have regrets because it was possible to regain even more ground from our competitors. Fortunately there was the Conference League.
