The number of CoV vaccination breakthroughs has risen sharply
Coronavirus
Vaccination breakthroughs have risen sharply in Austria in recent weeks. Although the proportion has been relatively low since the vaccination campaign began, the curve has been rising steeply since the end of September.
The corona vaccination is safe and protects. That is the mantra of politics and also the predominant professional opinion of medicine. On the other hand, it is increasingly unclear how well the vaccinations protect or protect: how long.
The science magazine “Nature” assumes that it only takes three months before vaccinated people, especially the delta variant, can pass them on again. At the same time, current statistics from Austria show that the number of vaccination breakthroughs is skyrocketing – from a total of ten percent since February to around a third since February in autumn. If you only look at deaths in the last four weeks, every third corona case affected a fully vaccinated person.
Vaccination effectiveness decreases after five months
The Salzburg infectiologist Richard Greil says that an expected number will probably also increase. This is due to several factors, adds Greil: “The first factor is that the first vaccinations that were carried out were now almost nine months ago. We know that after about five months there is a significant decrease in the protective effect – compared to PCR positivity. That clearly means that we are actually relatively late with the necessary third vaccinations. It is important to get the third vaccination quickly now. “
But it is also a fact that at least severe courses are largely prevented by a vaccination. Booster vaccinations are likely to remain necessary in this case as well.
