The FGTB Métal Liège-Luxembourg keeps the same “boss”

The activists of the FGTB Métal Liège-Luxembourg met for their statutory congress this Friday in Seraing. This congress, which takes place every 4 years, had on its agenda, among other things, the renewal of the presidency of the Liège steelworkers. Thierry Grignard, already in office since the withdrawal of Francis Gomez in 2019, has received a new mandate.
On the occasion of the statutory congress which took place at the Abbey of Val Saint-Lambert, the activists elected their new president. Unsurprisingly, the only candidate, Thierry Grignard, received the confidence of 142 of the 168 voters.
During this congress, the leaders of the socialist union did not fail to reverse the decision of the Liège court of appeal, which fell on Tuesday. As a reminder, 17 FGTB activists, including the current president Thierry Bodson, were sentenced to suspended prison sentences for having participated in the blocking of the Cheratte motorway viaduct, 6 years ago. The FGTB disputes the interpretation of article 406 of the penal code. It intends to lodge an appeal in cassation and will also launch a campaign in 2022 in favor of freedom of association.
For the time being, the closest fight for the union organization is set for Wednesday, October 27 in Liège. A call for the mobilization of activists was launched for a demonstrator on the sidelines of a meeting of extremists wishing to create an extreme right party in Wallonia. Defending democracy is also one of the foundations of the FGTB.
