Socialist Prague without tourists and colors. You probably won’t believe these pictures today
Until recently, it was impossible to walk through the center – for example, on the royal road – without being missed. In addition to the crowds of tourists, a lot of visual smog, which is full of the historical center of Prague, prevents us from a pleasant view. The coronavirus epidemic depopulated the Prague center for a short time and returned to thirty years ago in terms of the number of tourists. However, Prague was completely different in many respects at the time, and the view of the images offers an interesting comparison of how our capital has changed over the past thirty years.
As you can see, some places haven’t changed much. Jindřišská Street connecting Wenceslas Square and Senovážné Square still looks very similar, even though other tram numbers now run there. Charles Bridge full of locals may be found only very early in the morning, when the tourist is still asleep. Seeing playing with children in Rytířská Street is almost an utopian idea, although not so long ago, when people also lived in the center.

The old-new synagogue, on the other hand, looks much better – the picture still has an old unworthy facade, and if we look inside, we will notice that we also have a neglected interior. Fortunately, there are no more inscriptions on Wenceslas Square such as “With the Soviet Union forever” and the National Museum has finally been dignifiedly repaired. If it weren’t for the highway, maybe one would like to go for a walk around it.
According to the condition of the buildings and people’s clothes, the images by an unknown author, which you will find in the gallery, are probably from the mid-1980s.
