“Old” Lisbon Airport and has not evolved in terms of capacity
“Lisbon airport is old […] and it is, according to data from January, in 17th place among those that have, in the European framework, more movement”, pointed out the head of the air traffic control tower in Lisbon, Cristina Lima, at the International Air Traffic Control Conference .
During his speech at the conference, promoted by the Portuguese Association of Air Traffic Controllers (APCTA), a NAV official noted that the infrastructure has not evolved in terms of capacity, and in 2019, it already had 88% of its capacity occupied.
“As capacity was being occupied, delays were increased. In terms of constraints at Lisbon airport, [destaco] that this is surrounded by a restrictive airspace “, he indicated.
Cristina Lima thus warned of the need to be “very present” of all the constraints of the current infrastructure when choosing the new airport.
“For the coming years of recovery, we have to face up to the fact that the solution for the future, which is being studied, will not happen in a year or two. We will have to work hard, in collaboration with all the ‘stakeholders’ [partes interessadas], whether in terms of traffic control procedures, optimization of airport procedures, of the various companies and of the management of their fleet”, concluded.
