Also in Antwerp exercises together for the climate “Spijbelen? No, this has been deployed” | Antwerp
AntwerpThe climate march in Ghent brought 1400 students on their feet, but Antwerp was not left behind either. Three hundred young people – whether or not dressed in the theme of the Day of the Youth Movement – walk today during school hours from the Operaplein to the Groenplaats. To give a signal, but also to put pressure: “There are always profiteers among them, but our goal is clear.”
The rain did not protect high school students from traditionally making a point during school hours. The activist movement ‘Youth For Climate’ called on Flemish young people to continue today – now that the weather is possible – what they started in 2019.
Especially in Ghent, the emergency call for a better climate policy is loudest: “But we also wanted the young people who do not have the budget to move to Ghent a chance to make their voice heard here in Antwerp”, Miguel says. Van De Vyver (18), who set up the campaign with some friends. “The politicians don’t listen to us, so the strike actions remain relevant. We don’t skip school, we strike. Let that be clear. And yes, there will be profiteers, but most of them are here for the climate.” Luna Alewaters (16) jumps in: “We are not here to chill, but to give a clear clear.”

And that signal is clear. For the government to the Climate Conference in Glasgow Gumus, ‘there must be pressure now’, according to Celine. Current government reports and assurances on the KDG skip today to protest: “The current government must take ongoing measures and impose binding standards. The blame can’t just be put in the shoes of the consumer, the big polluters must also do their part. .”

Some students of the GO! Koninklijk Atheneum Berchem also joined the march: “The climate problem is omnipresent and depends on political ideologies”, says RedFox member René (17). “An unwarranted absence of no, it’s time the politicians listened to us.”
The operation was peaceful and without incident, police said.
