Luc Lacoste the president of FFR XIII evokes the two matches on Saturday between France and England (men and women) and the two world cups.
What is the objective of this France-England?
This is important after the saga of the Dragons and Toulouse Olympique: we have two very good matches scheduled for Saturday in Perpignan. From a sporting point of view, it will not be easy for the girls. Some of them have not played for two years for the English. But the girls had a preparation with a series of internships like never before. The important thing is not to achieve a result but to show us how committed they are and will wet the jersey. For the boys, it will not be easy because we have a few absentees but at the finish line, we want to show the English that we have to reckon with the France team. The players will also have to earn their place for the 2022 World Cup. We will have to show fierce determination for 80 minutes: that’s what I expect the most.
Exactly, what will be the objective for the 2022 World Cup and how many preparation matches will there be?
The goal has not changed for the men. We will have done well in our World Cup if we qualify for the quarter-finals. Until then, we are trying to have a match during the international window in June and a complementary match just before the start of the World Cup.
Where is the World Cup file that France wants to organize in 2025?
The file was submitted to La Diges (Interministerial Directorate for major sporting events). The state is looking at our file. A meeting is scheduled for November. This is looking good because we have a very nice project. On a considerable number of returns from local communities wishing to host training camps or matches. We need about 40 cities. We talk to 79 of them.
The Elite 1 championship has just restarted with only nine teams instead of the expected twelve. Comment do you see the future of this championship?
The federal plan is to offer the elite championships 1 and 2 with more teams, matches and therefore revenue. We had candidate cities for the elite 1 but their structures were too fragile. The object of the game was not to send them to the scaffold. We preferred to be more careful to give the clubs time to strengthen themselves. We always want an elite 1 which tends towards 12 clubs. If necessary, we will take a year or two more. It is not worth going too fast but at nine clubs, we will still have a very good championship.
On the TV file, are there any advances for Elite 1 and the Super League?
We have an agreement with Vià Occitanie to broadcast elite 1 matches from day 3. Sport in France the CNOSF channel also broadcasts these matches. And then the France-England boys and girls meetings will be broadcast at our initiative on BBC 1 and 2, in Australia and France, on Vià, Sport in France and L’Equipe TV. It’s a cover like we’ve never had for the France team. This is the first time that we will receive rights. Regarding the Dragons and the TO, I hope that we will be able to offer their matches with those of the France team on the same channel. I believe a lot in this triptych. Rugby League interests.
