AS Monaco – Sampdoria Genoa: 2-2 (April 3, 1990)
The double confrontation against Sampdoria Genoa remains in the history of AS Monaco for two reasons. First, because it is the first European semi-final in Club history, in the Cup. But also because to this day, the first leg played at the Stade Louis-II remains the one with the greatest attendance in the enclosure of Fontvieille, with 20,000 spectators.
Facing the team of the duo Gianluca Vialli – Roberto Mancini, Arsène Wenger’s men are not favorites but still achieve a superb match and snatch the draw (2-2) thanks to goals from George Weah and Ramon Diaz . If the Italians, future winners of this C2, will show their superiority on the return (2-0), AS Monaco shows this season that it is in its place among the top European.
Manchester United – AS Monaco: 1-1 (March 18, 1998)
Reigning French champion, Monaco managed a very good group stage of the Champions League in 1997-1998, first out, just ahead of Bayer Leverkusen. In the quarter-finals, it is an ogre who stands in front of the men of Jean Tigana, who must rub shoulders with Manchester United.
After a goalless draw at Stade Louis-II, everything is decided in the return leg at Old Trafford. In the “Theater of Dreams”, the very young David Trezeguet, not yet world champion, only meets five minutes to shake the nets with a powerful strike from the right. The equalizer of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer does not change anything (1-1), AS Monaco holds its place in the last four of the Champions League.
AS Monaco – La Coruna: 8-3 (November 5, 2003)
A moment out of time. The kind of evenings where everything succeeds. This is what happened on November 8, 2003, at the Stade Louis-II, against the formidable team of La Coruña, in the group stage of the Champions League. Beaten in the first leg in Spain (1-0), Didier Deschamps’ team takes its revenge, and with style!

After 29 minutes of play, the Red and White are already 4-0 and return to the locker room with an advantage of three goals (5-2), signed Jérôme Rothen, Ludovic Giuly and a triple from Dado Prso. On his 29th birthday, the Croatian even offered himself a quadruple in the second half, during a festival in which Jaroslav Plasil and Edouard Cissé also participated and which ended with an incredible score of 8-3! The most prolific match in the history of the competition until 2016 (Dortmund’s 8-4 victory against Legia Warsaw).
AS Monaco – Real Madrid: 3-1 (April 6, 2004)
Another Spanish team and another gala evening at the Stade Louis-II. Opposed to the Galacticos of Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, Didier Deschamps’ men lose 4-2 in the first leg and are doomed to the feat in the return. Everything seems finished when Raúl opens the scoring at the 35e minute, but Ludovic Giuly gives hope by scoring just before the return to the locker room.

Madness then seizes Louis-II and the gang in Zidane, Ronaldo, Figo or even Roberto Carlos is overtaken by the red and white tornado. Loaned by Real, Fernando Morientes scores with a superb header from the 48e minute. And it is Ludovic Giuly, of a heel on a center of Hugo Ibarra (66e), which is in charge of making this evening switch definitively into legend.
Arsenal – AS Monaco: 1-3 (February 25, 2015)
Out first in his hen, AS Monaco found Arsène Wenger in 8es Champions League final. And the former Monegasque coach will not keep fond memories of his reunion with the club he brought back to the title of champion of France in 1988. At the Emirates, the Monegasque youth is blowing a wind of panic in the ranks of London. .
Geoffrey Kondogbia (38e) opens the scoring with a deflected strike, before the experienced Dimitar Berbatov deceives David Ospina (53e). The Gunners push and end up scoring in the 91e minute but Yannick Ferreira Carrasco, at the end of a mad ride in front of a boiling Monegasque yard, comes to give two goals ahead to his team. A capital goal, since Arsenal will win 2-0 on the return but Monaco will qualify thanks to away goals.
AS Monaco – Manchester City: 3-1 (March 15, 2017)
Comment do we say “remountada” in English? Ask Manchester City fans, they still remember the one suffered in Monaco, in 8e final second leg of the 2016-2017 Champions League. Despite the first but in C1 of young Kylian Mbappé and an anthology lob from Radamel Falcao, the Monegasques lost 5-3 in the first round in England.
The delay is filled from the half hour of play, after a new but from Kylian Mbappé and a realization of Fabinho. Pep Guardiola’s team then thinks of securing its qualification when Leroy Sané finds the flaw (71e), but a header from Tiémoué Bakayoko capsized the Louis-II (77e) and send AS Monaco to the quarter-finals.
But also…
Obviously, this list is not exhaustive and each one, according to his age or his sensitivity, can have a different legend match. We can also cite, for example, the quarter-final second leg of the 1997 UEFA Cup, a great success against Newcastle (3-0) which had improved that of the first leg (1-0), thanks in particular to a double by Ali Benarbia. Or, of course, the semi-final first leg of the 2004 epic against Chelsea. In a crazy atmosphere, and despite the expulsion of Andréas Zikos at the start of the second half, Didier Deschamps’ men managed to win 3-1, with achievements signed by Dado Prso, Fernando Morientes and Shabani Nonda. And you, what is your greatest European memory?
