Several years’ imprisonment in an extraordinary robbery trial in Salzburg
Three previously convicted men of Serbian origin (29, 26 and 34 years old) were sentenced to several years in prison on Thursday in a frequent lay judge trial in Salzburg for an unusual attempted robbery on an elderly lady.
The incriminated assault attempt – there was ultimately no personal “contact” between the trio and the lady – took place on March 17, 2021 in the city of Salzburg. According to the indictment, the troubled trio had previously received a tip from an acquaintance that the said elderly lady had inherited 25,000 euros and the money apparently on the 17th. According to public prosecutor Elena Haslinger, the trio made the decision to rob the woman. The men drove to the main train station, the 29-year-old got out – he was supposed to push the woman down and snatch the handbag from her, while the 26- and 34-year-olds waited in the getaway car. However, the trio, who were in contact with each other via cell phones to ensure that the crime was carried out smoothly, did not know that their cell phones had already been secured in connection with drug deals.
The fact is that the robbery did not take place in the end; According to the public prosecutor, the 29-year-old gave up the execution of the crime because a police patrol appeared near the bank immediately before he struck: “There was no impunity to withdraw from the (robbery) attempt because the act was not given up voluntarily,” said Haslinger. The Senate (chair: Judge Dagmar Schmidt) sentenced the three men (defense lawyers: Kurt Jelinek and Peter Macheiner) to prison terms of between three and six years in accordance with the indictment, partly also for other criminal offenses. Two of the three judgments are not final.
