Actor Ray Stevenson: I mainly love architecture in Prague, the series Rome changed my life iROZHLAS
Charismatic Irish actor Ray Stevenson has no role. You may know him as Thor’s overgrown adjutant. He starred in the series Under the Black Flag, Vikings or Medici. For the first time, however, the role of Tito Pulla in the HBO series Rome was attracting attention. Stevenson was another star guest of the Prague pop culture festival Comic Con this weekend. As he revealed in an exclusive interview for Radiožurnál, he has been wearing the ring from the filming of Rome for 16 years.

How did you get into the role of Pulla?
It was a big coincidence. I was just making King Arthur in London and I got a bit of a weird audition offer for HBO. At the time, I had no idea for months that the three creators of the series were already trying to fill the role of Tito Pulla. So I walked there, fell rather loudly, and everyone visibly rested, ‘Oh my God, we finally have him!’

It was the year 2005, at that time I was going through a rather difficult period – I was getting a divorce. There were no children in it, but it was sad anyway. So I focused on work. And then I go to rent an apartment in Rome and there’s this woman, her owner, and she says, ‘So you want to rent my apartment?’
She was beautiful and I wondered where the cameras were. No, and now we have three beautiful sons together, we live in Ibiza and life is simply great. And only thanks to the series, which was really crucial for me in terms of film career in the United States.
So you’ve never been to Italy before?
He wasn’t, but he won me for the first time. The Italians are great. For example, their relationship with children – they run around the restaurant, no one solves it. It is necessary to feed completely strangers. The English would say something like, ‘For God’s sake, whose child is this?’ I am the body and soul of the Celts, the Viking, so the Italian nature suits me.
I guess you have already made a film in the Czech Republic. Remind me who it was?
I’ve even been here twice for filming. Specifically, there were two series – Without Borders and Das Boot – we have now completed the third series in Malta. Anyway, this time I took two older sons with me to Prague. They are here for the first time, we rented such a historic car and drove through the Old Town. I showed them the astronomical clock, Wenceslas Square, Charles Bridge and so on. But then they discovered some crazy candy store.
Anyway – everyone probably tells you – the local architecture is unreal. You see everything from the Baroque to the Renaissance.
Hvězda Terminátora: Nikdo pod čtyřicet nemůže pochopit, jak temným obdobím jste si museli projít

Jakou knihu zrovna čtete a doporučil byste ji?
Je to kniha Will of The World, což je biografie o Williamu Shakespearovi. Premiéru by měl mít v lednu. Od listopadu začnu točit pokračování britského filmu Accident Man.
Když jste zmínil covid, jak osobně jste prožíval lockdown a co vám během něj nejvíc chybělo?
Mně to hodně dalo. Kvůli práci neustále cestuji a takhle jsem měl příležitost strávit spoustu času s rodinou a dětmi.
A co mi chybělo? Zdravý rozum. Většina těch opatření podle mě byla úplně zbytečná. Uvidíme, ono to jednou pomine a někteří lidé budou hnáni k zodpovědnosti. Nicméně spousta lidí také zjistila, co se vlastně ve světě děje a že je spousta věcí úplně zbytečných.
Přeci nepotřebujeme dovážet balenou vodu z Austrálie do Evropy. Tam a zpátky. K čemu jsou v Británii organická jablka vypěstovaná v Africe? Všechen ten opad z toho pak znečisťuje oceány. K čemu potřebujeme tak obrovský globální trh? Doufám, že se to někde včas zastaví. Lidé teď víc vnímají svoje okolí a lokální produkci.
