Ascendant Vierge is a transnational and transmusical duo based in Brussels, created by the goth-pop singer and performer Mathilde Fernandez and the dj and producer Paul Alone, co-founder of the iconic Casual Gabberz collective. In astrology, the Virgo Ascendant is recognized for his prudence and his very ordered side. An analysis that is surprising when we look at the very first song of the duo, Influencer in 2019, a real mini-tube of the dancefloors.
The song was recorded in May 68 by an unknown young singer: David Bowie. She speaks of a boy who breaks the rules, in an unreal lushness. The song is called Silly Boy Blue and its title, like its invitation to rebellion, has not fallen on deaf ears. Ana Benabdelkarim was of course not born when Bowie rubbed shoulders, in excess, with her hero Scott Walker. But this taste for risk, this unlimited musical ambition, this freedom with conventions or the genre, this joyful melancholy still resonate very strongly in the dreams of the young singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer already spotted among the people of Nantes. Pegasus. In turn, she now embodies Bowie’s Silly Boy Blue, transforming this title into a name and her fantasies into augmented realities.
After having explored a very acoustic ground, Exit understood, faced with the multiple proposals of producers, in particular by working with Makeameal, that she wanted to offer music that is still unique in France. A colorful trap or soul R’n’B, synthetic or organic, depending on the mood, allowing his voice to play on multiple intonations. “I like to outdo myself,” she says, “I don’t want to do highway music”. Lovers of easy listening, go your way! Even if Sally does not forget the strength of the melodies. They are the ones who nourish her very personal French texts, where she tells about “life, depression, disappointments in love… life! “.
