The traffic light also flashes in Austria
This is remarkable in that, with the exception of the Kreisky years from 1971 to 1983, there was never a left-wing majority in Austria. The fact that the right majority in question was only perceived politically twice (2000–2007; 2017–2019) has different reasons: above all the specific character of the FPÖ, which made ÖVP wait a long time, but also the break-off of the BZÖ or the short-term one Appearance of the Stronach team.
If, in the medium term, nuns in Austria were to form a government for the first time in red, green and pink, this would in any case bring together what belongs together. In most policy areas – from migration to education to socio-political issues – there is broad consensus anyway. The bit of economic liberalism that the Neos (presumably the weakest of the three parties) would bring in doesn’t bother too much, especially since with the departure of Sepp Schellhorn the last attraction of this wing has left the pink ship, which is generally under the leadership of Beate Meinl – Reisinger has become more and more clearly listed to the left. Nevertheless, one should hope that, at least when it comes to pensions, the neos would be a voice of reason – as with migration, the Doskozil wing of the SPÖ may soften green-pink dreams.
But all in all, that would be a classically left (sliberal) government. And you have to say, no matter how you feel about it: why not? Change is a part of democracy, and at least the ÖVP has been in power for a really long time – continuously since 1987 (with the exception of the Bierlein government).
That would (hopefully!) Put an end to the eternal excuses of grand coalitions such as: one hundred percent SPÖ or ÖVP program can only exist with an absolute majority; one would like to, but the coalition partner …
It would be a thing of the past even with a marketing disgrace like the “best of both worlds”, which should poorly camouflage the fact that here is together what does not belong together: because here – despite all ideological gutting – diametrically superseded ideas of society and economy (world / The image of man used to be called) colliding.
If it works out mathematically, there is much to be said for realizing this majority. After five years at the latest, the voter has his say again.
