Norway, Sweden and Denmark are the only applicants
This was announced by the European Handball Federation in a press releaseg Wednesday.
It was in May 2021 that it became known in Norway, Sweden and Denmark merge and apply for the European Championships in 2026 and 2028 (both sexes). Ahead of the EHF Congress in November, where the award will be made, several of the applicants have withdrawn or changed their candidates.
Now the solitaire card is such that the following applications remain as the only ones for the four relevant championships, according to EHF’s announcement:
- EHF EURO 2026 for men: Denmark / Sweden / Norway
- EHF EURO 2026 for women: Russia
- EHF EURO 2028 for men: Spain / Portugal / Switzerland
- EHF EURO 2028 for women: Norway / Denmark / Sweden
It is not decided which arenas will host the championships in Norway, but for 2026 Bærum / Oslo, Stavanger and Trondheim are relevant host cities. For the women’s championship 2028, Bergen is also a candidate, in addition to the three other cities. For this tournament, the plan is for Norway to host the European Championship final itself.
