Next bankruptcy for VfL Wolfsburg – 1: 3 in Salzburg | NDR.de – Sport

The crisis at VfL Wolfsburg continues. In the Champions League, coach Mark van Bommel’s team conceded a deserved 1: 3 (1: 1) defeat at RB Salzburg on Wednesday. It was the seventh game in a row for the “Wolves” without a win.
“You can’t lose a game in an artful way,” said van Bommel. Above all, the two goals conceded by standards in the second half, “which you can’t defend like that,” worried the Dutchman: “It’s a question of concentration, you can’t train that.”
“We haven’t been hit the wall a single time. We won four times and now we haven’t seven times, but we did exactly the same.”
VfL coach Mark van Bommel
After two draws at the beginning, it was the first bankruptcy for Lower Saxony in the “premier class” and a setback in the fight for the second round in Group G. “Now we have two points, which means that it is a must, the two home games to win.
Wolfsburg got off to a very bad start in Salzburg. In the third minute, the “wolves” lost the ball in the forward movement, shifted into reverse gear much too pompously and conceded the 0: 1. The German international Karim Adeyemi reacted much faster than VfL defender Kevin Mbabu and scored free in front of goalkeeper Koen Casteels to give the hosts the lead.

Nmecha heads the compensation for Wolfsburg
If Noah Okafor had not hit the bar in the twelfth minute after a long ball (John-Anthony Brooks had miscalculated), but into the Wolfsburg goal, the game would almost have been over for the North Germans. So the “wolves” bit into the game, picked up the pace and aggressiveness of the hosts and were rewarded. Lukas Nmecha headed the equalizer (15th) in an open exchange of blows.
Again Nmecha narrowly missed the opening goal for VfL when Salzburg’s Maximilian Wöber bravely slipped in at the last second (39th). On the other hand, Casteels grabbed a strong foot defense when Luka Susic tried (45th).
Okafor seals VfL bankruptcy with a double pack
After the break, Salzburg shifted up a gear and deservedly took the lead. Casteels had previously prevented the home side’s second goal against Adeyemi (57th) and Jerome Roussillon against Susic (58th). in the 65th minute, Okafor reacted fastest in a confusing situation after a corner and scored 2-1 for the Austrian champions. If this goal was to be ascribed to the category “unfortunate”, the 1: 3 field was rather under the keyword “indisputable”. Again Okafor scored for Salzburg and was completely free after a corner from three meters in front of the VfL goal (77th).
Wolfsburg offensive again harmless
In addition to the lack of concentration on the defensive, at least in the Wolfsburg team, at least in the second half, there was again a blatant weakness in the offensive. The Van Bommel team was hardly at all dangerous in front of the Salzburg Gate. The brilliant ideas were missing, but there were also no players to take control of the issue.
additional Information
Wout Weghorst would have been someone who could have carried the team away. But the attacker is missing due to his coronavirus infection and will in all probability not be in the Bundesliga in the home game against Freiburg on Saturday (3:30 p.m., in the NDR Live Center). Can the “wolves” end their crisis then? The appearance in Salzburg should have given the VfL fans little hope.
