Lisbon and Porto will work to get closer and closer guarantee Coins
“We are going to work together, above all, to bring ever closer these two fantastic cities that are Lisbon and Porto,” said the new mayor of Lisbon to journalists, upon the arrival of Rui Moreira’s inauguration for the last and third term ahead of the Porto City Council.
Referring to Moreira as a “friend and great mayor”, Carlos Moedas expects a “great cooperation” focused on bringing Lisbon and Porto closer together.
“I’m here with great joy, Rui Moreira is someone I’ve known for many years and he’s a great mayor and, therefore, I’m here to symbolize the relationship between Lisbon and Porto”, he stressed.
The mayor of Lisbon City Hall recalled that Rui Moreira was also at his inauguration, which took place on Monday.
Rui Moreira’s swearing-in ceremony began today at around 18:00, at Pavilhão Rosa Mota, in Porto, and has in the audience, in addition to Carlos Moedas, the leader of the CDS-PP, Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos.
Rui Moreira was elected Mayor of Porto by the independent movement Rui Moreira: Aqui Há Porto !, which got 40.72% of the votes, electing six councilors, having failed to re-edit the absolute majority achieved in the 2017 municipal councils.
In turn, the election elected seven mandates – three from the PS, two from the PSD and the CDU and the Left Bloc each, the latter elected for the first time.
Without an absolute majority, the movement of the independent Rui Moreira and the PSD established a governance agreement and agreed measures for the next years of mandate.
The agreement is dependent on the incorporation of measures contained in the social-democratic program in the Plan and Budget of the Porto City Council for 2022, such as the reduction of the Single Income Tax (IRS) between a minimum of 0.5% and 0.625% in municipal component.
The PSD will not have representation in the executive’s portfolios, nor in municipal companies.
However, at the Municipal Assembly, the PSD will present Sebastião Feyo de Azevedo, former rector of the University of Porto, as a candidate for chairman of the board, with the already announced support of the Rui Moreira movement.
