“It is starting to repeat the situation from last year. But this time we will not take into account the fact that children have to stay at home, “said Mayor Zdeněk Hřib at a press conference on the epidemic situation in schools in Prague on Monday. Therefore, in consultation with hygiene, it will invite principals of schools where the situation is critical to evaluate the situation.
“According to this, directors can voluntarily decide whether to declare director’s leave on Monday and Tuesday,” Hřib added. This would apply to approximately 150 schools. Schools in the South Bohemian Region and also in Jihlava are already thinking about extending the holidays.
The local municipality, as the founder of primary schools, also recommended, after consultation with the Regional Hygiene Station, to school principals to declare director’s leave for these days. And according to the mayor of Prague, the considerations appear in the Moravian-Silesian and Olomouc regions.
Prague also wants to test
In addition, Prague Councilor Vít Šimral added that the city is currently finding out that schools are interested in voluntary PCR or antigen testing. It would start on November 1. Another date is out of the question yet.
Marie Kubíková, a councilor for education from Prague 6, has the same opinion. “Children should be tested when they return to school from different stays. We have coronavirus in ten of the fifteen primary schools and we have a total of 31 sick children and two sick teachers, “says Kubíková. According to her, there were over 500 children in quarantine in Prague 6 last week, while there were still only a hundred of them in quarantine on 5 October.
“Today, the schools will receive reports recommending whether principals would consider principal leave,” said Šimral, adding that no one wants to introduce drapes in teaching, as the Ministry of Health is thinking. “It’s scandalous behavior,” I think. Robert Plaga, the Ministry of Education, also distanced himself from the statement of the Ministry of Health.
The opinions of schools differ on tests and distance learning
The situation concerns, for example, at the Londýnská Primary School in Prague 2. Last week they did not have a single class in quarantine and now there are five of them – one of them in part. “There are still small children in quarantine in our country, among whom no one could be vaccinated. The only exceptions are those that covid has suffered during the last 180 days, “says primary school director Martin Ševčík.
The last time co-testing for coronavirus in schools took place three times in September, and Ševčík is one of those who would recover. “We also talked about it with our city district. The legal problem is that the vast majority of parents are in the same mood, but some are not convinced of the meaningfulness of testing, “Ševčík.
Three whole classes plus seven are partly quarantined by the director of the Nad Štolou Grammar School in Prague 7. “When more than half of the class is vaccinated, part-time teaching continues. When there are fewer vaccinated pupils, we only provide distance education, ”explains director Renata Schejbalová. According to most students, in the upper grades of the grammar school, they are vaccinated, so the quarantine can only affect one or two pupils in the class.
On the other hand, Lenka Derková, the principal of Campanus Elementary School in Prague 11, does not see salvation in school testing. According to her, the antigen tests that the school received in the past were not very convincing. In the case of resumption of tests, it would be more for the PCR method.
Campanus Elementary School now has three quarantined classes. “We are doing nothing but tracing. With two representatives on weekends, we call parents who are angry. One mom even told me how much money she would lose because she couldn’t go to work. There is a positive half of the pupils in one class, but they are all asymptomatic. One teacher is also sick, “says Derková. According to her, the school has no problems with the reintroduction of distance learning. Although the school has distance learning equipment available for loan, no one has needed this option yet. According to the principal, it is enough to participate in online lessons is a smartphone, which is said to be owned by most children today.
