Ilias, 5 years old, educated near Toulouse, but without papers
Education Sans Frontière Network 31 is organizing a week of mobilization towards undocumented families. That of Ilias, 5 years old, educated in a school in Tournefeuille, near Toulouse, is one of them.
On this Wednesday morning, Ilias, 5, has only one idea in mind: to go to the swimming pool. Rachida H., her mother, urges her to wait a few minutes. The child turns with his bicycle around the many people present at the exit of Georges-Lapierre school, in Tournefeuille. He does not know that they are places to support his family.
31. The activists hold information stands at the exit of some schools and offer parents of pupils to sign petitions. The situation of Rachida and her family is particularly close to their hearts. “They fill all the boxes for regularization, the mother works, the two children go to school. We are continuing our efforts to have the Prefect re-examine their situation, ”explains Annie Latapie, spokesperson for the association.
Since arriving in France in February 2017, the family has oscillated between hope and disappointment. Since May 30, justice has ruled: the family has the obligation to leave French territory. A difficult decision to accept. “We applied for asylum in France because my husband, who was campaigning for the independence of Kabylia, had received threats. And since we arrived, Ilias has blossomed a lot. He has been diagnosed with autism. In Algeria, it would not be charged ”, testifies Rachida.
“We would like to be able to lead a normal life”
The 31-year-old works as a nursing assistant in a retirement home. She would explain the fact of feeling useful for others, her wish, however, would be to be able to practice as a nurse. “To pass the equivalence of my diploma, I must be regularized. All you ask is to be able to lead a normal life. This also allows the H. family to rent a functional apartment. At the moment, there are four of them living in less than 30 square meters. Asked about the case of this family, the prefecture was not able to answer us.
This Thursday, from 7:40 a.m., another solidarity café will be held in front of the Marcelin-Berthelot high school in Toulouse in support of an Armenian student. That same day, at 4 p.m., a rally organized by DAL 31 and Un toit pour Learning will take place at the Didier-Daurat elementary school to support two families of students without accommodation.
