Followers of Indian guru run waffle restaurant in Amsterdam: ‘We are not a cult’
While meditation and mantra music plays in the background, the staff of the waffle restaurant in Amsterdam’s Czaar Peterstraat makes waffles with all kinds of toppings. In the ‘oasis of peace’ as the owner encompass the restaurant, visitors can not only eat waffles, but also follow. The founders are followers of the late Indian guru Sri Chinmoy.
“I can say that Sri Chinmoy has really interested me in doing this and putting this down,” says owner Abhinabha Tangerman. “To be an accessible entrance for inspiration, mediation, but also a restaurant where you simply get very good service and you are served with a smile.”
It is no coincidence that the unusual restaurant is located in the ‘world city’ of Amsterdam, according to Tangerman. “There is a lot of room for this, I really want to disprove the image that we are some kind of cult, that is absolutely not the case. It is a place where you are welcome and you can feel comfortable, nowadays you see that mediation is also more mainstream is becoming.”
‘spicy year’
Because the restaurant opened its doors just before the corona crisis, the owner had to make ends meet another year. “We had a very tough year, the lockdown really cut in. We were open for take-out, but that didn’t go very well. We really had to survive.”
