Born in Toulouse and 23 years old, Benoît Mergny shines on League of Legends, an online strategy game that sees two teams of five compete against each other. Professional player, “Benaset”, as he is nicknamed in the esports planet, is aiming for a new galaxy for the next season. Whoever has always been passionate about screens aspires to Play in the LFL Premier League (French League of League of Legends) in 2022.
A license and a flight
Benoît and video games, it’s a long story. ” I play Gameboy with my brother, when I was little ”, remembers the young man, who obtained a baccalaureate S, before taking the direction of a DUT in IT in Blagnac.
In May 2019, he obtained a general license in computer science. “I have always played video games alongside the school curriculum. In license, I followed the courses a little less, because I started to be in serious teams. But I went all the way. After validating it, I told myself that I had to go for it in the sport. ”
In computer science, to be good, you have to practice and plan on your own. I was not in that approach. On League of Legends (LoL), there is a ranking system, and when I played on my own I was ranked well and started to have good teams.
Benoît was quickly able to count on weight supports. ” My big brother helped me convince my parents. They trust me. It was my decision, says the Toulousain. I showed them that I had my license and that there was something to do in esport. ”
Why did you set your sights on LoL? “It’s a strategy game on which you can evolve a lot“, Answers the player, whose vision of the game has changed. “It was fun at first, and then it started transformed into competition. “After having done his classes alone, he gains strength as a team.
Step by step
On LoL, each of the five players that make up the team a well-defined role. That of Benaset is to be support. “It’s a role that is often initiated. You have responsibilities, and a lot of ‘proactivity’: you have to create actions that will be positive for the team ”, appreciates the Haut-Garonnais.
In January 2020, Benaset joined Warthox, “A little-known team but which was the first to pay me”. After a stint in a Spanish structure, he was recruited, in January 2021, by the Oplon team, who, when he joined his ranks, played in Division 2 of the LFL. The goal is to climb to the first rung.
It was a chance for me. This structure offered the best support in division 2. With hindsight, it was a year of experience, even if it did not end very well: they decided to replace me for the Up-Downs, the competition. which qualifies for the first division. But I have learned a lot, individually and collectively.
However, before Team Oplon decides to part ways with the 23-year-old, he contributes to his good results. The team closes the spring and summer split (sessions) in pole position, and wins the play-offs at the end of August. “It was the first team in which I had a contract, something stable. “This stability allowed him to” work on important stuff. “
And above all to analyze its performance. “I watch my matches from the day before, I listened to the vocal again, to see what I said too much and what I’m improving on, ”he explains. “It’s a routine that has been put in place. “
Thank you for this year during which I was able to grow as a player and as a person even if it ended earlier than expected for me! Good luck to the team for the ups and downs! https://t.co/zO45tDFeNB

Success with Bifrost, ahead of the pivotal year
Beginning of October, Benaset bounced back at Bifrost, a Norwegian team which aimed to advance to the first division of the NLC (Northern League of Legends Championship). This is a different league from the LFL since it brings together the structures of the UK and countries in northern Europe.
The contract was extended during “the period of the qualifying tournament to go in the first division of NLC »Explains Benoît Mergny. For him, “it was important to leave with a new team to see what I thin to bring, what are my strong points and what i owe me focus for 2022 ″.

The mission was a success since Bifrost qualified for the first division of NLC. In mid-October, Benaset is therefore looking for a new challenge.
We don’t know what the future holds. To play in the first division of the LFL, that would already be something incredible, with everything that has happened this year. It is the most recognized league in all of Europe. I posted a message on Twitter that I was looking for a team. Then on paper there is supposed to be testing. On will see!
After qualifying for NLC with @Bifrost I am now LFT for 2022, I am looking for LFL, ERL and LFL2 offers!

Defend and transmit your passion
“Abnormal to earn money by playing on the console”, “sedentary lifestyle”: how many prejudices sadly pollute the world of esport? ” This is clearly not the reality… ”Regrets Benaset. “Personally, I earn less than the minimum wage, but I have help with the allowances, and then I’m not a spendthrift. So I don’t have a problem, ”he continues.
It is very important to have a good rhythm of life. At Oplon, someone followed me: every two weeks, I had an appointment to talk about my daily life, the routine, the good habits to have. But esports is a world like any other, with a lot of stress in it, whether it’s due to short careers, or the pressure of social media.
Benaset also praises human values. In the different structures, he was able to play with English, from Swedish all of Spaniards. “It allows you to share things, and learn from others also ”notes the Toulousain. “It’s all about feeling and personality. “
Sometimes I am told that my career is not going to last. Me, I clearly think it will last. Esport is increasingly recognized in France. A coach emphasized that it was important to be mentally supported by family and loved ones. We must not give up and find the right environment.
If he defends his passion, Benoît Mergny also wants to pass it on. ” The job of coach could interest me. But for now, I am focusing on the career of a professional player. And by the way … Why Benaset? “It’s my first name in Occitan. I did kindergarten until 3e“, Smiles the one who grew up in Saint-Lys.
Well-anchored roots. Wings ready to stand. As boarding approaches, Benaset hopes for a next stopover in the French elite of League of Legends.
