of teachers launch an award in honor of Samuel Paty
This award is intended to pay tribute to the educational action of the teacher murdered a year ago by a terrorist. The theme of the 2021-2022 edition is: “are we still free to express ourselves?”
One after Samuel Paty’s death, an award in honor of the murdered teacher was launched by teachers on October 8. It is organized by the association of history and geography teachers.
This prize aims to “pay tribute” to the former professor of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine college and to his “educational action”, explains to BFM Lyon, Christophe Capuano, professor of contemporary history at the University of Grenoble Alpes and president of the jury.
“I think he would be proud”
This prize was imagined in June 2021 and is offered to middle school students and their teachers as part of an annual theme linked to moral and civic education programs. For the first edition of this competition, the subject proposed to the candidates is: “are we still free to express ourselves?”
“I think he would be proud because we chose a prize that looks like him. It’s a prize that wants students to think about fundamental freedoms,” explains Christophe Capuano.
The stated objective is to develop approaches similar to those taken by Samuel Paty, assassinated by a terrorist in October 2020 after having shown caricatures of Muhammad during a course.
Registrations open until November 26
The founding teachers hope that this prize will allow students to reflect on questions of freedom of expression or freedom of opinion. They also want this prize to be transdisciplinary in order to have, in collective work, a cultural dimension to which Samuel Paty was very attached.
“He was the culture referent within his establishment,” recalls the president of the prize jury.
For the desired teachers with their courses, registrations are always open. The registration form, available on the site of the award, must be returned by November 26. The work must be submitted by the end of April 2022. The formats are free and can just as easily be posters as videos or even podcasts.
A few days ago, many commemorations were organized all over France to pay tribute to Samuel Paty, one after his death. A minute of silence was also observed in schools on October 15.
