Nausėda: Lithuania and Poland have not yet used all the opportunities for cooperation
He spoke in the Seimas to commemorate the 230th anniversary of the vows between the two Nations.
“I am glad to say that Lithuania and Poland continue to move forward together. Observe the rapid development of bilateral relations in recent decades. However, I am sure that we have not used all the opportunities for cooperation so far, ”the head of state said.
According to the President, the spirit of the May 3 Constitution and the mutual vow of the two Nations, enduring two particularly difficult centuries and newly wounded in the current era of freedom, always inspires the people of both countries.
“Let mutual trust, respect and tolerance always form the basis of Lithuanian-Polish relations,” said G. Nausėda.
To talk about the Constitution of May 3 and the mutual vow of both Nations adopted on October 20, 1791, the emphasis of the Lithuanian leader that the authors managed to reconcile the need for centralization of the state with the tradition of state independence of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
“The document, the 230th anniversary of which we are commemorating today, is important to us not only as one of the components of the May 3 Constitution. This is first of all proof that the development of Lithuanian-Polish cross-border relations has been and continues to be based on the art of compromise. It must be based on trust and tolerance. Only in this way can the strategy of communion be extended – and based on it in the changing geopolitical reality, ”G. Nausėda asserted.
Speaking about current bilateral relations, he said that today the incentive to act together are growing military, technological, economic threats and challenges.
“Attempts to heat the atmosphere at the eastern borders of the European Union and NATO pose special tasks for us, not only to ensure the security of our countries, but also to maintain balance in the region. “We must pay special attention not only to bilateral military cooperation, but also to a strong NATO one, strengthen our border infrastructure and include in our security system to supply us with culture, to supply a politically close Ukraine, and to restore its territorial integrity,” said the Lithuanian President.
“Our countries spare no effort so that the citizens of neighboring Belarus can freely and democratically elect their country’s government. “We believe in this, so we consider the Lublin triangle format open to the democratic Belarus of the future,” he said.
Mr Nauseda thanked Poland for managing the migration crisis caused by the Belarussian regime and for its political support for the Astrava NPP.
“As before, I personally have high expectations of cooperation between Lithuania and Poland in developing the EU’s Eastern Partnership policy. The stability and future prosperity of the whole region depends on our success in this area. Therefore, every effort must be made every day to ensure the strategic direction of the Eastern Partnership policy and to maintain the impetus for ambitious reforms, ”said the President-in-Office.
On Tuesday, the minimum of the 230th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of the Two Nations and the Act of Mutual Vow of May 3 will be held in Vilnius.
On that occasion, the President of Poland Andrzej Duda, the Deputy Marshal of the Seimas Malgorzata Gosiewska and the Vice-Speaker of the Senate Bogdan Borusewicz are visiting Lithuania.
The Constitution of May 3 is considered the first Constitution in Europe. It was adopted by the Four-Year Seimas of the Republic of the Two Nations on May 3, 1791. The mutual vow was accepted a little later – on October 20.
In Poland, May 3 is a public holiday, while in Lithuania this date is at least more modest, because the Constitution, when desired, reduces the independence of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the common state with Poland.
