65th anniversary of laying the foundation stone of the Deurne district house: “Valuable architecture with its own beauty” | Antwerp
DeurneOn 20 October 2021 it will be exactly 65 years ago that the first stone of the town hall of Deurne was laid by then mayor Maurice Dequeecker. The district is therefore putting the ‘House of Deurne’ in the spotlight with the website and some activities.
For lovers of modernist architecture, Deurne is paradise. The district house, the Unitas houses, the Atheneum, the Couwenaar library, the Braem blocks and various houses are part of this architecture.

History
At the end of the 1940s, the municipality of Deurne decided to build a new town hall. Architect Eduard Van Steenbergen drew the design, but died later. His son Edward Van Steenbergen Junior is further developing the plans. The design is a modernist business complex, with an administrative and a representative wing that connects to a central tower. The foundation stone was laid on October 20, 1956. Eight years later, the entire building was completed.

On October 20, 2021, exactly 65 years after the date, the district will commemorate the laying of the foundation stone of the town hall of Deurne. The district is therefore putting the ‘Huis van Deurne’ in the spotlight. The website huisvandeurne.be provides additional information about the history, construction and interior of the district house. The website is a tour of the building with photos and facts. The texts are based on notes from the architects and mayor Dequeecker.
The district launched an appeal at Deurnen, which saw the light of day in 1956, the same year as the first stone of the district house was laid. On 20 October, these residents of Deurne will take part in a guided tour with an exclusive reception and live music in the district hall. The guides from ‘Expeditie De Stad’ show them the building and interior. On Thursday 21 October at 2 pm and Friday 22 October at 7 pm you will find additional free guided tours with guides from ‘Expeditie de Stad’.
