Russia opens its wine list
The best domestic wines were named at the 10th All-Russian Summit of Winemakers, which takes place in Abrau-Dyurso. This is the main event of the year for businesses and farms that are engaged in viticulture and winemaking in Russia… The summit brought together about a thousand thousand people to discuss the problems and the future of the industry. How is the task of putting Russia on the wine map of the world being solved?
There are now more than forty meters of rocky ground above us: champagne is aged here in silence and coolness. Today these bottles are known all over the world. We are in the homeland of Russian champagne – in the village of Abrau-Dyurso.
Domestic winemaking was born here 150 years ago. Hence the champagne batches went to the Russian imperial table and for the first time abroad. The summit of winemakers in 2021 is also an anniversary – the tenth. The main topic of discussion is the problems of the industry: it is necessary to plant vineyards, open nurseries, and develop production. For this, winemakers are an electronic self-regulatory organization.
“Looking into the eyes of a friend, we determine the quality and control mechanisms,” explains Dmitry Kiselev, Chairman of the Council of the Union of Winegrowers and Winemakers of Russia.
Today, the law “On viticulture and winemaking” permits Russian to call only the wine that is produced from grapes grown in the country. You cannot use imported wine semi-finished products. it gives Russian winemakers advantages: subsidies for domestic seedlings and the ability to develop.
“The state drew attention to our industry, today we are working within the framework of the new law.
In two years, the industry received 3.5 billion rubles of state support. The area of vineyards in the country has grown to one hundred thousand hectares. For lands where you can grow grapes, a new category has been introduced, so the law will protect them from development.
“Today, grape-growing lands cannot be built up,” says the governor of the Krasnodar Territory, Veniamin Kondratyev. “A type of permitted use has appeared – viticulture”.
