The first decades of the twentieth century are a time of rapid development of new trends and trends; this is one of the most interesting and fruitful periods in the history of Russian music. The rapidly changing historical environment put forward more and more requirements for artists, whose mission is to creatively comprehend the changes, to capture the moods, sounds and colors of their time. The works of Stravinsky and Prokofiev, the Danish decade of the century, absorbed the artistic aspirations of the Silver Age, and Shostakovich’s symphony was one of the first iconic works of Russian music of the post-October period, reflecting the mentality of the young Soviet intelligentsia.
“Parsley” – one-act ballet by Igor Stravinsky… The music of the ballet is woven from ingeniously used popular melodies of urban folklore, seasoned with bold dissonances, against the background of a love drama of dolls – Petrushka, Arap and Ballerina. Four pictures, going without interruption, are separated by drumming: “Festivities on Maslenaya”, “At Petrushka’s”, “At Arap’s”, “Festivities on Maslenaya (in the evening)”. The ballet Petrushka, staged in 1911 in the Russian Seasons in Paris, has become one of the symbols of Russian music for Europeans.
In the First Symphony by Sergei Prokofiev (1917) clearly traces the signs of neoclassicism – the directions in which the composers of the twentieth century were involved. In this joyful work, permeated with sunlight, the composer demonstrates perfect mastery of the characteristic techniques of the previous styles. As conceived by Prokofiev, who called his symphony “Classical”, clear melodies and transparent orchestration in the style of Haydn and Mozart are combined in her musical language with “a touch of new harmonies.”
Dmitry Shostakovich wrote First Symphony at the age of 19 by the end of the Leningrad Conservatory (1925). The symphony was assessed by the examination board as a manifestation of the highest talent “and as an unusually early creative maturity of the young author. The symphony became the first page of the composer’s musical chronicle, reflecting in his work about time and about the person living in it. The First Symphony is a kind of psychological drama with dramatic collisions and vivid theatrical effects, and the spirit of irony that will be characteristic of Shostakovich’s symphonic canvases slips in her music.
