Toulouse. The Metropolis will acquire a new heating (and cooling) network in this district

To advertise itself as “a committed player in the ecological transition”, Toulouse Metropolis equip the new Commercial Development Zone (ZAC) Grand Matabiau Quais d’Oc of a “Heating and cooling network virtuous ”.
This gigantic development project should notably allow construction, between 2023 and 2032, housing and offices over a large area near the Matabiau station. The Metropolis promises there “a moderate and qualitative densification of the habitat, by accommodating tertiary activities and trade, as well as spaces of leisures and public equipments”.
A biomass boiler in Matabiau
Two years after the installation of a first heating network at Mirail, a biomass boiler is therefore in the works in Matabiau. This solution, which is “the most suitable technically and economically”, defends the Metropolis, “could be supplemented by any other means of production based on renewable energy or recovery, such as geothermal energy, solar thermal, or the recovery of waste “. The objective being to “provide renewable cold on tertiary equipment ”.
Service approximately 490,000 m2
According to feasibility studies, this network could “serve a minimum the Grand Matabiau Quais d’Oc area of 490,000 m2 approximately ”, ie 52% for tertiary buildings, 34% for housing (ie 2,575 housing units) and 14% for shops.
Near the ZAC, several buildings could also be connected to the heating network and thus increase the volume of carbon-free heat consumed on the territory ”, claims again the Metropolis, which intends thus to save at least “6,000 tonnes of CO2 per year”. So that the project is “more ambitious” still, other existing collective buildings, supplied with town gas, could be connected to it.
A public service delegation
Estimated at this stage at 21 million euros, the planned investment is colossal and “could still evolve”. The community hopes to amortize it over 30 years, “in order to obtain a competitive heat and cold price, both for new buildings and for existing buildings ”.
For the design, construction and operation of this new heating and cooling network, the Metropolis plans to adapt to urban a public service delegation.
