Toulouse. “A single death remains unbearable”
How does the Toulouse public prosecutor’s office deal with the issue of domestic or intra-family violence?
This subject has always belonged to the priorities of the prosecution. For two years, and the Grenelle which recommended 45 measures, a more particular sensitivity exists in the public opinion. In Toulouse, my predecessor Dominique Alzeari had instructed two members of the prosecution to follow up these cases as closely as possible. They continue their missions within the framework of a great partnership. We are very committed but we have to be even more efficient.
Qhat do domestic violence weigh on the activity of the Toulouse public prosecutor’s office?
A very sustained daily life with several police custody each day. Currently, 20% of people who are presented to the Toulouse prosecutor’s office are managed in cases of domestic violence. This significant figure shows our willingness to provide a firm criminal response.
Which does not necessarily go through detention
The prosecution requires placement under a committal warrant in the most serious cases. Our response must adapt to each particular case with the concern of protecting the victim and supporting the perpetrator to avoid the risk of recidivism as much as possible.
How can you be more efficient and avoid drama?
A single death remains unbearable and we are fully committed to avoid it. Each new drama forces us to question ourselves, to reflect on the answers we provide. Today, more aware, our judicial police officers are better trained, our support for victims is progressing, which we are offering to protect them as well. Every two weeks, we consider a specific point of the convicted persons whose release is approaching and their state of mind. This helps us assess the risk of recurrence. We still need to improve the monitoring of these perpetrators. The creation of a reception center for these men constitutes an important project which should help us to avoid acting out.
